Strictly the basics,
By Rob Z. (NJ, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Berlitz German Premier (Win/Mac) (CD-ROM)
You get what you pay for. I have tried a couple of different of these type of "intro" products in hopes of learning enough German to make my way around while traveling in Germany and Austria; and I do not see where one is better than another. The Berlitz German Primer is just that, a primer. At best it gives you enough to ask some basic "survival" questions and (hopefully) recognize some basic things you may encounter, for example, while in a restaurant, at a train station, hotel, etc.. Again, my experience has shown me that all of these inexpensive programs will do the same thing. The biggest disappointment with this Berlitz product is the MP3 files that can be loaded onto a personal audio device. These are nothing but a series of words and a few very short catch phrases; pretty worthless. Don't think for one minute this program enables you to recognize much, if any, German spoken by native Germans because it will not. Again, its value is as a very basic entry level language primer and it does that as well as the other inexpensive products that are available.

Cheaper Than Rosetta Stone!!,

I've gotta say that I tried so many language learning programs out there (even taken a formal class), and Berlitz Premier has to be the best. With the various ways to study the language (listening, reading, watching video clips), this edition has it all for you. My personal favorite are the CD's for on-the-go and the video clips (it's like watching German TV, I guess).
I had heard many things about the Rosetta Stone language courses, but honestly feel that paying nearly $500 for 3 levels of course is just bulls--t! Even just 1 level at $200 a pop is rape! I looked carefully at the description and can't find any differences except for the people saying it's the best they used. I'm not risking that much money to find out! Berlitz interactive lessons allow for reading, the flash-cards allow for easy recognition and spelling, and the videos and CD's allow for natural language learning, so you hear how people actually talk and not some kraut talking down to non-German speakers. Overall, this program rocks! Can't go wrong with this one. And if you do, you don't have to give yourself a DDT for spending so much money.

For the Money...,

For the money this a truly a "Premier" program. I've never tried programs like Rosetta Stone because of their prices, but for German Software under $50, this is a very impressive and thorough program.
If you are trying to learn to speak German than this is the program for you. If you are trying to learn read German, say for graduate comps., then you'll find it less helpful. But it does establish the foundation for German that you'll need when you go to learn the German Jargon of your field.
