5.0 out of 5 stars Cheaper Than Rosetta Stone!!
I've gotta say that I tried so many language learning programs out there (even taken a formal class), and Berlitz Premier has to be the best. With the various ways to study the language (listening, reading, watching video clips), this edition has it all for you. My personal favorite are the CD's for on-the-go and the video clips (it's like watching German TV, I guess)...

You get what you pay for. I have tried a couple of different of these type of "intro" products in hopes of learning enough German to make my way around while traveling in Germany and Austria; and I do not see where one is better than another. The Berlitz German Primer is just that, a primer. At best it gives you enough to ask some basic "survival" questions and (hopefully) recognize some basic things you may encounter, for example, while in a restaurant, at a train station, hotel, etc.. Again, my experience has shown me that all of these inexpensive programs will do the same thing. The biggest disappointment with this Berlitz product is the MP3 files that can be loaded onto a personal audio device. These are nothing but a series of words and a few very short catch phrases; pretty worthless. Don't think for one minute this program enables you to recognize much, if any, German spoken by native Germans because it will not. Again, its value is as a very basic entry level language primer and it does that as well as the other inexpensive products that are available.

My personal favorite are the CD's for on-the-go and the video clips (it's like watching German TV, I guess).

I had heard many things about the Rosetta Stone language courses, but honestly feel that paying nearly $500 for 3 levels of course is just bulls--t! Even just 1 level at $200 a pop is rape! I looked carefully at the description and can't find any differences except for the people saying it's the best they used. I'm not risking that much money to find out!

Berlitz interactive lessons allow for reading, the flash-cards allow for easy recognition and spelling, and the videos and CD's allow for natural language learning, so you hear how people actually talk and not some kraut talking down to non-German speakers.

Overall, this program rocks! Can't go wrong with this one. And if you do, you don't have to give yourself a DDT for spending so much money.

5.0 out of 5 stars For the Money..., April 5, 2008

For the money this a truly a "Premier" program. I've never tried programs like Rosetta Stone because of their prices, but for German Software under $50, this is a very impressive and thorough program.

If you are trying to learn to speak German than this is the program for you. If you are trying to learn read German, say for graduate comps., then you'll find it less helpful. But it does establish the foundation for German that you'll need when you go to learn the German Jargon of your field.

Hello, I recently bought this product and I am very satisfied with it. I am a linguist who is trying to learn his 5th language and this product is helping me do so. It teaches you a completely new language, in a simple way. No matter if you had prior knowledge. It surpasses your expectations, and surprises you by finding out how much you had learned. Simply its one of the best language learning softwares out there.

Good price and good service. The course is both an audio course and a complete computer course. I use the audio course during my commute in my car.

Overall, a good introductory primer to the German language, with multiple learning formats: 2 audio CDs for listening in the car as well as MP3 compatibleexercises in addition to the regular computer software. This software package isn't for the more advanced individual trying to immerse oneself in the language, but for the individual trying to learn the basics in order to obtain the necessary linguistic skills needed for survival during an overseas visit to any German-speaking populated area.

Decent but not spectacular. Scenarios are a little cheesy, but the norm for learning a foreign language. Very useful for someone who know very little or no German. The "flash cards" feature is pretty good and would be helpful for anyone traveling to Germany. MP3 program may work great on an Ipod, but was a waste on my MP3 player without an accessible menu.

I bought this German set for my teenaged daughter to learn the German Language. It is a very helpful set and is very interesting.
She enjoys it very much and we plan to use it for the next 2 years.
I am very happy with this purchase.
