The New Basic German program from Berlitz has not only been redesigned in a new "millennium" blue package but the entire course format and lessons have been revised to better appeal to today's language learner. The 128-page Course Book is filled with colourful graphics, maps, and illustrations. But along with that you'll discover practical vocabulary and topics, plus some imaginative exercise... The Berlitz lessons are well organized and well-designed. I particularly like the many practical activities for each lesson... I have awarded the Berlitz New Basic German program five stars (out of five) because it offers a superb introduction to German at a reasonable cost. Once I'd already bought it, it was too late.
I have since downloaded, for free, a much better German course from a web site I found after a bit of searching...This course is slim on content, too slow, too much English...Don't waste your money.

This package includes 6 CDs and a well thought out and illustrated coursebook on basic German. The recordings are pleasant, practical and will help you in popular topics encountered on the street in real-life conversations and short expressions. I tried to learn German in a formal couse that included conjugating verbs, etc and I struggled with that method. This course is much easier (and fun) and will give you a quick intro that will help you get by. You will learn how to order food and drink; hail a taxi; ride the train and many other common encounters. I always travel with a dictionary so that I can at least find the right word but this course gives you all you need for an intro to German. Berlitz is the best-selling course for beginners.
