5.0 out of 5 stars Bernadette on fire!
This is probably my favorite recording of Bernadette (too bad it didn't include "Chico's Girl"). Bernadette's voice has a tough, raw quality to it on some of the songs like "Only Wounded" and "Other Lady" where you can literally hear her voice crack and cry with emotion. That's why I love this...because it is so emotional! The hit single "Gee Whiz" is a great throwback...

2.0 out of 5 stars disappointing
I found this CD to be a disappointment. I enjoy Bernadette Peter's work but this album was not up to the usual standard I have come to expect.

The production on the album was poor and the quality of the songs was mediocre at best. The pace and phrasing of the album seemed off to me. The songs were all slow and lacking in emotion.

Ms Peter's voice was excellent as...

The hit single "Gee Whiz" is a great throwback to the 50s and Bernadette was able to score points on Radio (and even an appearance on American Bandstand). This is great stuff that shows why Bernadette Peters is a Broadway Idol!

I am a fan of Bernadette Peters and have been since I first heard her sing in the delightful show "Dames at Sea" - so many years ago. My admiration for her singing and her interpretation of wonderful songs have done nothing but expand. This particular recording is mostly made up of music recorded in 1980 and 1981. Beginning with Steven Sondheim's "Broadway Baby" from Follies and ending with Harry Warren's "You'll Never Know" this is packed with great songs and magnificent singing. While I like every single one of the songs, the poignant "Other Lady" by Lesley Gore and Ellen Watson seals the fate of this CD to be at the top of my most listened to stack that I keep handy at all times. Wonderfully subtle renditions of "Mean to Me" and "If You Were The Only Boy" help to make this CD one of the best collection of Ms. Peters' singing that is available. Trust me - if you like good songs, terrific singing, and Bernadette Peters - RUSH to get this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Prime Peters, April 16, 2002

Recorded during Peters' prime, this album is a wonderful foray into pop songs rather than Broadway. Combining selections from two LPs issued in the late '70s, it allows Peters to showcase her great range of expressiveness and vocal resources. My only regret is what I call the "Cuban" song from one of the LPs did not make the final cut onto the CD. What is here are very good '60s and '70s pop songs covering a wide emotional range performed all out by one of the best voices of her generation.

5.0 out of 5 stars I Don't Know Why I Just Do, October 25, 2000

There are parts of this recording that will get to you. Like the medley "I Don"t Know Why/Mean to Me". You really feel for the gal depicted in the song, and that takes real singing and real acting. In fact, you may even want to join a group that fights for the dignity of women. This album is not as polished as her next album, but then, she had a decade to polish herself up for that one. But it is a great album, highly reccomended.

5.0 out of 5 stars My first Bernadette album, June 27, 2001

I never even knew who she was until I saw her on the Johnny Carson Show one night singing Pearl's A Singer. I was really touched by the feeling she put into the song and went right out and bought the album. I also liked the artistic look of the Vargas painting. Since then I've bought her other CDs and always enjoy her television appearances. It was my sincere wish to see her in Annie Get Your Gun on Broadway but I didn't get there in time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Waited a long time for this one on CD!, October 26, 2009

Finally, the two scratchy albums I have from almost 30 years ago have been combined for one fabulous CD! Her versions of "If You Were The Only Boy", "Pearl's A Singer", and especially "Should've Never Let Him Go" make this a rare treat. Peter Allen also plays piano on some of the songs. Not only is her voice in perfect form but her subtle, angst-filled delivery is full of restraint and storytelling ala Streisand. No wonder this little powerhouse slays live audiences on stage. I ordered two copies since I knew this would be a limited release so don't miss this one. She really is our Broadway Baby!

If you are able to buy this CD, you are in for a treat. I purchased it used from a company called, The Beat on the internet. It was shipped quickly and looked brand new when I received it. I first heard of this collection when I went on Bernadette Peters web site. I kept hearing a beautiful song called "Other Lady". I learned that these songs were recorded in 1980/81 before she became one of the biggest diva's. Although these songs are not from Broadway shows, it really shows the quality of her voice! After seeing her in several concerts and on stage in "Gypsy" and "Annie Get Your Gun" I am convinced she is one of the greatest actresses of our time. I was very lucky to meet her personally at the stage door and she was so down to earth and generous of her time. Bernadette's tenderness is truly expressed in these thirteen beautiful captivating songs. Bernadette, you are truly a gift from God! Keep singing! Your greatest fan!

The production on the album was poor and the quality of the songs was mediocre at best. The pace and phrasing of the album seemed off to me. The songs were all slow and lacking in emotion.

Ms Peter's voice was excellent as always. However the passion or feeling behind the songs seemed to be lacking.

Overall I would say the album is not up to Ms Peter's usual quality.
