This is a demanding, encyclopedic book of enormous importance. Bernanos was one of the great novelists and essayists of the last century. Cardinal von Balthasar was, perhaps, its preeminent theologian. With acute understanding and sensitivity von Balthasar presents Bernanos -- often in his own words, with interpolated commentary -- in all his glory, greatness, torment, childlike innocence, his boldness and vulnerability, his genius and lifelong adventure embedded and enveloped by his Catholic Faith. Bernanos could rage and roar against the 'imbeciles' and 'mediocrities' of our times because he met head on the ubiquity of evil, retained his faith, his keen sense of honor, which, as von Balthasar explains, became a shibboleth and watchword for him, and, hope, and, in a very real sense, fought through to a complete and measured faith -- measured precisely to reality and to to all of reality's ultimate dependence on Grace. This was Bernanos' life story, and, as he himself said, Bernanos was his books: it is the struggle of his unforgettable characters in novels as gripping and unflinching in their action and as profound and subtle in their insights, especially into the anguish and distresses of spiritual life, as the best of Dostoevsky or Faulkner. And as Bernanos was his books, so he was a writer with a style of great beauty, waves of eloquence -- especially in his essays --, freshness and lyricism, serene, meditative and often melancholy grace. Von Balthasar is not without his gentle reproofs of Bernanos' occasional extremes and excesses but his deep appreciation shines through this resplendent and magisterial study.

BernanosBernanos: An Ecclesial Existence (Communio Book) provides a most instructive look at what Dr LukacsRemembered Past: John Lukacs On History Historians & Historical Knowledg might call, 'thinking about thinking.' For my purposes it was necessary to read, study, and review this book, whiherein I underlined dozens of insights for transcribing into my writer's notes for future reference, which I do for the bulk of my reading, and all books read cover-to-cover. Bernanos is in my view essential reading for any who want more insight into proper living.
