Interesting combo, excellent performances., August 4, 2006

This combination of instruments is very unusual, but works surprisingly well. The music itself is, to my ear, worth between two and four stars--with the exception of Don Freund's riveting "Louder Than Words", a five-star piece all the way. What earn this whole CD the high rating are the players. Tse and Coelho (sax and bassoon) are perfectly matched in their agility, beauty and variety of tone, and interpretive flexibility; and Huckleberry (piano) absolutely sparkles as the colorful, vibrant, and rhythmically intense glue that holds the group together. Worth the price for both the novelty of the instrumentation and the panache of the players.
