Sir Bernard Lovell's Authorised Biography by Group Capt Dudley Saward,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Bernard Lovell: A Biography (Hardcover)
First published in 1984 by Robert Hale Ltd., London. It fits well in the hand with a 16cm wide by 24cm high format and is hard bound in black cloth with gold lettering. The blue & white dust wrapper has a picture of Sir Bernard seated at his desk against a background of the Jodrell Bank Radio Telescope. It is a remarkable book, important in the history of the 20th century, that chronicles the achievements of a remarkable man. Given that both subject and writer were involved in leading edge science all of their lives, it is surprising that there is no sign of an equation anywhere within its 320 pages; the first 120 of which deal with electronic wizardry for RAF Bomber Command during WW2. From the formation of TRE by the Tizard Committee came the GEE navigation system, OBOE blind bombing system, Air to Air interception radar, Air to Surface Vessel anti submarine radar the H2S airborne ground mapping Radar. Indeed many other things including salaries and cost of housing. The following 200 pages are devoted to the trials and ultimate triumph of the Jodrell Bank Radio Telescope, wonderful nail biting stuff. It is extremely readable with a good index and a Who's Who of persons mentioned in the text - a reference work of increasing usefulness. - JF May 2011.
