Most Helpful Customer Reviews

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful By Shalom Freedman HALL OF FAME on March 16, 2014
Included in this volume is the one book I believe Malamud should most be remembered for 'The Assistant'. It is in a way his most close-to- home, most modest work, and in it he presents his idea of the humanity that comes of suffering. The assistant is the helper of the grocer Morris Bober. It is non-Jewish Frankie Alpine who becomes through his work in the story and his relationship with its poor owner, and with the owner's daughter a kind of exemplary Malamud hero, a sufferer who in a sense becomes what Malamud conceives of as ideal. The love- story is modest , and quiet as is the whole progression of the work. The work has a beauty of language an English- Yiddish idiom of restraint and ironic perception.
Another major work included here is the baseball fable, Malamud's first novel ,'The Natural'. In this his love for a kind of fantastic realism prevails. I have always found it to be a good book but not as deeply moving as the more Jewish connected novels and stories.
Malamud is a master of care, an artist in the Flaubertian mode.
He does not have the loud clanging vital humor of his two great compeers Bellow and Roth but he stands with them at the heart of the great second half of the twentieth century flowering of Jewish - American Literature.
