I really enjoyed this book. The author did a great job putting together a collection of interesting historical photos that really tell a tale. The photos help to put a face on the history of the SBSD and the area. This book is certainly not a definitive history of the department but that isn't what it is meant to be. I recommend this book to anyone interested in the history of San Bernardino County or the west as it transformed from lawless to suburbanized.

I worked for the Sheriff's Department for many years and still have family members high up in the ranks. I got this book, looking forward to an actual history of the department I so dearly loved and, instead, found a biased "his"tory touting the "good ol' boys" club that has always been the department's biggest downfall and making the only person who actually ever tried to reform it into an objective, fair business sound like a joke. The author was one of the "good ol' boys," so I shouldn't have expected any different, but somehow I stupidly thought it would be an actual history, rather than just the skewed story spinning that it turned out to be. Shame on DeSoucy and shame on the editors for not doing a better background check on who they allowed to write this "historical" book.
