I have watched this film dozens of times. It gives you a deep, rich insight into life in China; first in the Imperial Court, then in the "Red Guard" era of China. If you like history, this is a very thrilling film to watch. However, do not get sucked into purchasing the four disk set. Of all the extra features, I have ever seen about the making of a film, this one takes the cake for being boring. All the extra features are have to do with bragging, bragging and more bragging about Fernardo Bertolucci. Get just the one or two disk set.
