From the Back Cover

Spanish colonial governor Bernardo de Gálvez gained the respect and admiration of the citizens of both Louisiana and the newly formed United States for his vigorous, capable leadership and military action during the American Revolutionary War. This comprehensive study follows Gálvez's career in Louisiana and the important role he played in the war, a role often left out of American history books. Divided into three sections, the book includes the history of Spain's governance in Louisiana before Gálvez, his governorship, and his brief career as viceroy of New Spain before his death in 1789. Though a large portion of the text focuses on Gálvez's military campaigns, which were the only battles west of the Allegheny Mountains during the American Revolution, the account also chronicles his daily colonial struggles, such as how to keep Louisiana safe from Indian attacks. A bibliography with notes about the location of records consulted and a portrait of Gálvez round out the biography. This thorough, well-researched, and readable work is an essential for any history lover's collection. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great information about a little-known history, August 12, 2001
By A Customer
Growing up in Louisiana, I had heard various stories about Bernardo de Galvez and his role in aiding the Americans during the Revolution. John Caughey explains it all in this well-researched text, including many incidents and facts that surprised me. For instance, it has been documented that the English planned an attack on New Orleans during the American Revolution and would have had not the Spanish attacked their forts at Manchac and Baton Rouge first. Genealogists with ties to the American Revolutionary battles in Louisiana will also enjoy this book. The text becomes a bit tedious due to the scholarly nature, but that's a minor point. The trials, tribulations and accomplishments of this little-known American hero are sure to delight all readers.
