This is an affordable, readable book that has plenty of pictures to illustrate the author's points. Information is provided to help you decide whether a Bernese Mountain Dog is suitable for your lifestyle. If you already live with a Berner, the book provides helpful hints about diet, exercise, and health care. I give this a Thumbs Up and I know -- I have lived and loved Berners for twenty years.

This book is great for the first time owner of a Berner. It has lots of information. It also includes some great references.

Barron's Complete Pet Owner's Manuals are very basic, which some reviewers find annoying. I don't, but unfortunately the "manuals" (really booklets) are also very uneven. "Bernese Mountain Dogs" contain a lot of excellent photos of this Swiss breed, which looks like you expect a dog to look like (something of a canine Platonic form?). The text, however, is boring, confusing and badly edited. It also contains weird but unacknowledged jokes. At one point, the author claims that BMD's can yodel! Come again? Perhaps they also make excellent fondue or stay neutral in world wars? Sorry, only two stars for this one, although the previously mentioned pictures deserve four or five.

The book is basic and really is an overview of the breed. If you are interested in specfic infomation look elsewhere
