“Whatever your politics, Bernie Sanders is an only-in-America original. Jaffe nails the story of the rise of a scrappy kid from Brooklyn and why he won’t quit.” (Brian Kelly, editor and chief content officer for U.S. News & World Report)
“A timely primer on America’s rumpled and lovable socialist.” (Dana Milbank, columnist, Washington Post)
“Harry Jaffe's deep reporting takes us into Sanders’s past to expose the forces that made him a socialist in his early days and the political prowess that propelled a child from Brooklyn to become Vermont’s US Senator and a viable contender for the White House. It’s an improbable story, well told.” (Michael Isikoff, chief investigative correspondent, Yahoo News)
“At last, the most comprehensive account yet of the life and career of Bernie Sanders. Harry Jaffe has done a remarkable job in this lucid and engaging biography of the radical maverick who keeps defying the rules of political gravity. Whether you love Sanders or hate him, you need to read this book to fully understand him.” (Mark Feldstein, former CNN correspondent and author of Poisoning the Press)
“Jaffe perfectly portrays Bernie Sanders as a product of Brooklyn in the 1950s, the biggest small town in America, the fourth largest city in the country, where each neighborhood was like a village. Jaffe’s reporting captures how Brooklyn and James Madison High School prepared Bernie Sanders to understand the history of the nation and the political and social issues of today.” (Stephen Joel Trachtenberg, president emeritus and university professor of George Washington University, class of James Madison High School ’55)
"Harry Jaffe’s . . . readily readable biography, Why Bernie Sanders Matters, provides a good background and history on the events and political philosophy."
—Jim Miles, Foreign Policy Journal

Bernie Sanders of Vermont doesn’t much like talking about himself. What an odd trait for a politician! Evidently, interviews with the Socialist Senator are scarce as hen’s teeth. Furthermore, up until now there has never been any kind of biography of the man. The journalist Harry Jaffe has corrected this situation with an unauthorized biography he calls “Why Bernie Sanders Matters”. Given the fact that Sanders has emerged as a serious contender for the Democratic presidential nomination potential voters need to discover just who Bernie Sanders is and what it is he stands for. What events in his life prompted him to embrace socialism? Which people were the biggest influences on him? Who are his closest advisers? How in the world did a man with such radical views ever get elected to Congress? Exactly what is his vision for America? In just over 200 pages Harry Jaffe provides the answers to many of these questions and offers a window into the life of the man who grew up in Brooklyn and was educated at the University of Chicago. If nothing else you will discover that Bernie Sanders is an honest broker who not only “talks the talk” but is also not afraid to “walk the walk”. Love him or hate him you will discover that “Bernie” is the real deal. Bernie Sanders matters because he has something important to say on a wide array of issues.Read more ›
This is a very readable book on politics. Although Sanders continues to be a private person and shies away from the barrage of interviews requested, Jaffe has done a thorough job of combining research on Sander's past and interviews with family, friends, and his staunch supporters. I came away with a better understanding of the issues Sanders is passionate about and the factors that contributed to his growth and development as a politician.
This is a fast read. I would advise anyone who plans to vote in November 2016 to pick up Jaffe's book and familiarize themselves with Sanders as he will play an important role in shaping the future policy of the U.S., even if he isn't elected President.
What I found most helpful is the explanation of Sanders' personal political philosophy of what he calls “democratic socialism.” He is not a socialist in the classic definition of the term, which is important for Americans to understand. It is the belief in the rights of workers to a living wage, to health care, and to campaign finance reform that forms Sanders' mantra. It is a simple, consistent message which he has disseminated for many years.
Even if Bernie Sanders doesn't get the Democratic nomination, his message shall have made an impact on large numbers of Americans who have not formerly been aware of income inequality and the economic exploitation of the masses by those who consider themselves “Masters of the Universe.” That is why Bernie Sanders matters.
What I found distracting in the electronic galley which I read was the number of mechanical typos and improper word compounding. I think the book would have been improved by a final editing and proofreading, but the message remains intact despite those flaws.
