The Dean of Chichester Cathedral and Vicar of St. Matthew's in Northampton, Reverend Walter Hussey, is well-known for procuring great musical commissions from leading composers of the day. The two large works on this disk, Benjamin Britten's Rejoice in the Lamb and Leonard Bernstein's Chichester Psalms, are the result of Rev. Hussey's commission. The two works, while one American and one English, share a certain quirkiness, but deep spirituality as well, and are now standard choral repertoire. Also on this disk are some shorter modern choral pieces, including fragments from the Mass by various composers, for a unique and inspired programmed choral CD.

Britten's Rejoice in the Lamb is a unique composition, mostly on account of the choice of text. Christopher Smart, an 18th century poet, wrote while institutionalized in an asylum; in his writings, including this one, Smart finds God in many places, including his cat. Britten's distinctive compositional styles play upon the interesting poetry: in seven sections, each describe many facets of religious thought. The opening introduction is mostly unison chorus and contrasting organ and sets the scene, while the following section, in a fast, uneven meter, describes many characters and animals from the Bible and their stories involving each other. A hushed, yet rhythmical, Hallelujah, calms the action before a male soprano, alto, and tenor soloists each praise God's creations of the cat, mouse and flower, respectively. Smart compares his situation in the asylum with Jesus: "For I am under the same accusation with my Savior" set in a dissonant chant. A joyous roundelay of imitation takes God's musical instruments and rhymes them with random words. The work ends with a reprise of the hushed Hallelujah.

This is a fantastic recording of some of the most important 20th century choral music in the repertoire. The Britten "Rejoice in the Lamb" and the Bernstein "Chichester Psalms" are represented here in what I think is the most perfect recording of these works available. Other wonderful additions are some works by Stephen Paulus, whose music has been so deservedly championed by the conductor. The Dale Warland Singers are one of the finest choral ensembles in the world. This recording helps to solidify an already stellar reputation. Buy it.

In his fine review Mr. Kniess describes the CD quite well, giving special attention to the Britten and Bernstein works from which the album gets its title. What I want to do is to point out the great richness of this generous (66+ minutes) collection and the remarkably fine performances given to these 20th-century works. The level of difficulty of many of the works is high: the complex sonic textures and shifts require precise intonation and coordination which would likely prove daunting to lesser groups, yet the Dale Warland Singers give every piece here an exemplary performance. And there is so much of this fine music, including several relatively unknown masterpieces!

The quality of sound on the disk is outstanding. The recording technicians, using 20-bit digital recording and mastering techniques, must have worked hard to achieve the fine balance and stereo imaging apparent here. The acoustics of the recording locale seem to have assisted their efforts, too. (The recording was made in the Chapel of St. Thomas Aquinas at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota, in June of 1999).

For lovers of modern choral music this disk is not only a necessity for the repertoire, but is a great bargain, to boot!

I am in a chorus that happens to be performing Bernstein's "Chichester Psalms" and Britten's "Rejoice in the Lamb" so it was quite fortuitous for me that this cd exists. I have quite enjoyed it since buying it. The chorus sings beautifully and on key (you'd be surprised to have to even say that); and I listen to the cd for enjoyment as well as practice.

What can I say...I love this group and whatever they sing! It just so happens that they recorded some pieces I was looking for, but I got a bonus because they had some beautiful music on the disc that I wasn't looking for!!
