I am a do it yourselfer and I have owned one of these kits for quite some time. It has been a life saver. I have done quite a bit of plumbing with the kit and it has saved me a lot of time and money. It works very well and it does an excellent job in heating copper water pipes for soldering.
I have gone through multiple bottles of propane but they are not that expensive and they are easy to find at many stores. My igniter flint is worn out and I have to use a match to light the torch. (I always forget to pick up new flints) My kit is so old that it came in a metal case and costs well under $15.00. This is a good torch and the kit works well. As you can tell from my review the product holds up and lasts a lifetime.
I have installed 5 water heaters, plumbed my basement and fixed countless broken water pipes for myself and for friends. It is also good for other uses like thawing frozen pipes and heating up stuck nuts like wheel lugs. The price here is very high and you can find this kit at much lower prices.
This is a great product and it does a very good job. I recommend it as a very good tool to own if you like to do your own home repair.
I first bought this kit in 1988. I still have and use the kit that I bought in 1988. I've used this for everything from soldering to thawing to starting woodstoves and campfires to starting charcoal briquettes to scortching the top of Creme Brule. The only difference between the new kit and my old kit is the bottle color. My bottle's white and the one in this kit is blue.
SIDE NOTE: Some people have commented to me that the idea of a 23 year old bottle of propane is rather scary. If you store it carefully (in the kit, in a cool dry place, nothing stacked on it), it will not corrode and it will be safe. Trust me...these kits last FOREVER! How long your gas lasts, of course, depends on how much you burn.
Everything you need to use the torch is in this kit. The only thing NOT in this kit is the material(s) that you are going to burn (e.g. pipe solder, flux, etc). This kit is complete with an easy screw-in valve, two different nozzles (different flame shape), a flame spreader (to widen the flame), a striker, and a tube of 2 extra flints for the striker. This kit also includes a 14.1 oz bottle of propane.
The ONLY thing about this kit that I DON'T like is that after several years, the plastic molded hinge on the back of the case broke so the lid will not stay on. I've had to duct tape the hinge area to keep the lid on. I'd love for the company to improve this kit by simply providing a metal box instead of a plastic box. The plastic just doesn't last a lifetime and the kit itself does. So the problem comes in...where do you keep the kit once the box breaks? Since we're talking about a propane gas torch kit, it becomes a safety issue. For the price their asking for these kits, you should never have to worry about safe storage for it.Read more ›
