I found this book indispensible in studying to become an operating room nurse. I have been a registered nurse for 25+ years and have not found a book more helpful than this in learning a new aspect of nursing. It shares tables, pictures, boxes of interesting notes and even websites and search engines to make learning more fun and interesting. Don't go into the operating room without it. This is no con!

I am a Student studying to be a Surgical Technologist and this is one of my core books. It is not helpful at all. I purchased a much better surg tech book called Surgical Technology for the Surgical Technologist. This is a much better book. It is directly from the AST. Berry & Kohns is geared more towards Nursing. I wouldn't recommend Berry & Kohns.

I used Berry & Kohn's Operating Room Technique in nursing school 26 years ago and it is STILL the best text there is about perioperative nursing. This text ranges from basic Aseptic Technique to the more complex surgical procedures. Positioning, procedures, and practice guides make this a must have for anyone in the field of surgery, whether they are a surgical tech, an RN, or an educator. I use it in planning inservices for staff development.

I have been a surgeons puppy dog for many years now. I worked in the OR before I went to medical school, then mainly took all surgery electives. This book helped when the discussion of positioning, the background, overview, and has pictures. I will use it next year when I am a surgical intern also. I only recommend to those who are serious about surgery or who have the money to get it during med school and have an active surgical core clerkship.

Like the other poster before me; this book does have alot of excess verbage relating to the RN. Reading that info, is helpful but I can't use it because as a surg. tech. I won't be able to work outside of my scope of practice. Every chapter you read has a nurses section and then a surg. tech section. you will find yourself skipping over pages just to get to the surg. tech. stuff. It does read like Greek as the other poster said. It's one of those small print, boring books that kind of put you to sleep trying to read it. They even have a section on how to operate the computer, computer lingo, etc. If I wanted to know that, I would have taken a computer course. I want to learn surg. tech. this book might teach that, but I'm sure there are better ones out there.

Please be aware that this item is not the most recent edition of this highly regarded text. The 11th edition is now out (published April, 2007) ISBN 0323044832. For whatever reason the author's name on the new edition is simply Nancymarie Phillips, in case you attempt to locate the latest edition by using the author's name. 11th edition is also available on Amazon.

This book does have alot of valuable info in it, however if you want to purchase a textbook that gives you quick, easy to follow facts this is NOT the book for you. I had to purchase this book for school and all of my classmates including myself complained about how hard it was to get quick, simple info from it. The explanations in this book are very complex and you have to read for a long time before finding what you want to know. Surgical Technology for the Surgical Technologist: A Positive Care Approach was the other book I had to buy for school, and it it much better than this book. I do not recommend this book.

This book is a "must have". Sometimes the index in the back doesn't match up with the page material so you have to go back or forward a page or two to find what you are looking for, but it was a great resource.

I have been a CST for 24 years. I feel The Surgical Technology for the Surgical Technologist is a much more useful tool than this book. Both are reasonably good to get you started, but as you will learn, technology is progressing faster than either edition can keep up with.

This year I have chosen the Berry & Kohn text. I think it is an excellent choice. I use this book in conjunction with Surgical Technology for the Surgical Technologist. Berry & Kohn is more extensive and includes more detail. However, I have not been able to find a text bank or instructor guide
