I have several tried to use other "carb. parts cleaners" that would'nt touch the varnish, deposits and gunk. I used it to rebuild a carb from 1954 pick up, Which has been sitting for 17 years(thought carb was too far gone for rebuild). Soaked them over night, I did'nt recognize them when I returned the next day, almost completly clean, what gunk was left was loose and easily removed.

The non-California cleaner is the only thing to use to clean varnished carb parts.

Absolutely remove any plastic or rubber parts prior to immersion.

A short soak will almost always remove all gunk, but an overnight soak definitely will clean the parts.

Rebuilt the carburetor on my Nissan Outboard and still had problems. Was advised to pull it and give it a hearty soak, which I did, and now all's well. This stuff works to really clean up in those impossible to reach locations!

Low VOC means it works at a low level. If you expect this product to eat grime, sludge, carbon, etc from small parts think again. I soaked a motorcycle master cylinder for a week and it didn't even touch the crappy paint that was on the outside, it just made it soft enough to make it annoying and painful to work with. Amazon ships this metal gallon in a cardboard box with no protection and it arrived smashed/leaking, TWICE! Don't get me wrong, I love Amazon and most of the products that they sell out of their warehouses but this is definitely not one of them. The price was right, but the product/shipping was wrong. Wish I could find a nice 1 gallon dipping tank. -Steve-

In the past I'd used carburetor cleaner, a relatively soft plastic blade, and a very soft brass bristle brush to clean carburetor and other motor parts. I saw some very good reviews for chem-dip and decided to give it a try, and I could not have been more impressed with the results.

It essentially dissolves or at least substantially softens build up and grim on carburetor and other engine parts to the point where when I'd pull a particular part, bolt, etc. out of the dip I could either just wipe off the residue with a rag or at most I'd use a tooth brush to easily scrub remaining grim or heavy residue off of the part.

In most cases I'd leave a part to soak in the chem-dip for 30 to 60 minutes, but occasionally I'd leave a particularly dirty part to soak over night. Without fail, this product delivered on its advertised promise and has all but eliminated the tedious task of cautiously scrapping and scrubbing parts and the need to constantly deal w/ the much more noxious fumes of aerosol carburetor cleaner. Though, while the chem-dip does not have nearly as noxious fumes as other cleaners, I still recommend working in a ventilated space while scrubbing off the parts pulled from the dip for good measure.

The only complaint I have regarding this product is the size of the can. While at 3/4 of a gallon it takes most small parts, I only wish it were bigger so I could fit even larger parts. I'll probably look to see if they offer a 3 or 5 gallon bucket with a similar strainer included in the future, as I'd love to soak elongated parts like intake manifolds and other bulkier parts.

Product worked very well for rebuilding a carburator. I am currently working on cleaning bolts and misc items for a motor rebuild. Can states it is not environmentally friendly so I am not sure how to dispose of materia when depleted.

I repaired a lot of lawnmowers in my younger days and I used permatex cold soak carb dip. Than when all the hazardous chemical laws went into effect, I couldn't find 5 gallon of permatex solution any more. Bought this instead to soak my lawn mower and weed wacker carbs. I smells the same as the permatex and does the job. I like the 1 gal container it takes up less space. Now in some walmart's in the automotive section i've seen this on the shelf. Good luck I recommend it.

This compound is, in my opinion, totally ineffective. Dipped a carburetor body for three hours and did not even start to soften the varnish (thank our politicians for the "wonderful" ethanol). Dipped overnight: nothing. Same results three days later.
In all evidence, "modern" varnish is a lot more tenacious than in older days.... or the new carburetor cleaner is a lot weaker than the old formulation.
Ultimately, I used acetone and a scrub brush. The only solution that worked.
Very disappointed.
