5.0 out of 5 stars a guilty pleasure
I love this cheese - every once in a while I treat myself. It's a yummy stinky cheese - very powerful flavor. I discovered it in Holland when my cousin had a party and served it, and sought it out in the US when I got back. The price here is a little high though, I think, as Whole Foods sells it at $15.99, and it very occasionally goes on sale for $12.99.....

versus
3.0 out of 5 stars Best Cheese EVER!
... but I have to note that the price is EXTREMELY high here. My local Whole Foods carries it for $14.99 a round, the local high-priced gourmet store for $17.99.
It's worth twice the price, but still... you might want to shop around!

5.0 out of 5 stars A delicious stinky cheese, but not too stinky, January 25, 2005
This review is from: Epoisses (Misc.)
My wife and I discovered Epoisse on our honeymoon in France and spent years trying to find it in the States. It isn't pasturized or something and for a long time wasn't available. Now that it is, we are so happy. It looks like Brie - perhaps a bit runnier - but has much more scent and flavor. It's excellent on french bread. If you like the texture of Brie and Camembert and also like the pungence of a Gorgonzola, then this is worth a try. (Not that this tastes like Gorgonzola, but they are strong in a similar way.)

5.0 out of 5 stars The Queen of Cheese, June 3, 2006
This review is from: Epoisses (Misc.)
This cheese is typical of Burgundy, and it's stinkcheese, so if you are offended by sweaty socks, barnyard whiffs or frank stenches, this is not for you.

But if you get your nose past these odors, this cheese is probably the most divine on the planet. It is often served warm as a dessert in Burgundy (like at the Hotel de Post in Beaune.) How it gets here to the US when it is usually or rightly made of unpasteurized milk is beyond me, because I didn't think it could be made from pasteurized milk at all.

It is soft and spoonable, but not runny. As I said, it's good served warm and it's a huge indulgence. If you offered me either this cheese as a dessert or a chocolate torte, I'd turn up my nose at the torte every time. Amazing, especially after a good Burgundy wine. Probably one of my favorite foods on earth.
