Memoir of a 90-year-old woman who grew up on an isolated ranch in the Sandhills of Nebraska in the early 1900's. Excellent historical information for both children and adults. A chuckle in every chapter.

Bertie & Me,
By A Customer
This review is from: Bertie and Me: Kids on a Ranch (Paperback)
I couldn't put this book down! Wonderfully written, I felt like I was there! Billie Lee tells her story well--a family living in the Nebraska Sandhills in the 20's and 30s. There is such happiness in this book. People then worked hard, and their children worked hard by their sides, and never once do you hear Bertie & Billie complain. It was their way of life, and they loved it. I think everyone will appreciate this look at life in a time gone past. Thanks, Billie Lee for sharing your photos, also. I fell in love with this book, and I think you all will, too.

This review is from: Bertie and Me: Kids on a Ranch (Paperback)
Bertie And Me: Kids On A Ranch by Billie Lee Snyder Thornburg is the inherently fascinating narrative of a true 1900's pioneer. Capturing the humble joys and sorrows of growing up on a Nebraska Sandhill Ranch, these autobiographical and anecdotal tales add fresh color and wonder into such routine and daily activities such as trapping muskrats, milking cows, and the remarkable day when "Mama Goes To Vote" because women had just received the right to vote in Nebraska. Captivating and nigh-impossible to put down, Bertie And Me: Kids On A Ranch is a superbly written memoir and very highly recommended reading!

The way it was,
By Muriel Clark (North Platte, NE USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bertie and Me: Kids on a Ranch (Paperback)
Billie's book is so important because it gives a picture of the way life was in the Nebraska Sandhills in the early part of the 20th Century. Fortunately there are still some around who remember this, but it won't be too long before they're all gone. Then all we will have to remember these hardy pioneers by are memoirs like Billie's. It's a great read and evokes the joy and hardship of a simpler time.
