Bess Flowers - Queen of the Hollywood Extras (Part 1)
A Listmania! list by Byron Kolln(the corner where Broadway meets Hollywood)
The list author says: "For classic movie fans, there's one face in the proverbial crowd we end up seeing and trying to find over and over again. She's unmistakable. That grey, elegantly-coiffed hair (irrespective of a film's particular period or era), delicately-featured face, and warm, sympathetic eyes. Her name is Bess Flowers, and she appeared in well over 800 separate films as an extra or "bit player". Once seen, never forgotten, however! Even though she was a mere extra, Ms Flowers has nevertheless secured her own fame as one of the most-credited actors in Hollywood history. She must have been the first name on the books at Central Casting. Crucially, she did have her own hefty connections in the business - her first husband was DeMille's assistant director Cullen Tate; and her second husband was William S. Holman, a manager at Columbia Studios.
This series of lists is merely a spotlight of films from her resume. Many of the films in which she appeared haven't yet been released on home video, so they aren't featured here (neither are her appearances on TV - yes she did a fair few television shows too, including several episodes of "I Love Lucy"!). You may be surprised at the number of "Hollywood greats" to which she is attached..."
