I am a 2nd generation cabinet maker. I was baptized with wood glue.
The Bessey 1/2" pipe clamp is a refined version of the Pony #52. Although this clamp is manufactured in China, the clamp is of excellent design and quality.
The clamp utilizes 4 "feet" that elevates and keeps the clamp from rolling while tightening. The feet are hooked on one end, which allows them to be hung on the wall when not in use.
The threads are black oxide coated acme threads with a 2" capacity. The handle is the thumb and handle design; fast and comfortable.
I read some complaints about the locking levers. Every cabinetmaker worth his salt knows to tap the levers with the same mallet used to align the boards being glued. No big deal.
My shop has 50 + clamps. My men always look for the "red Bessey's". We use 1/2" clamps always over the 3/4" size. The 3/4's are heavier and more cumbersome and the clampimg pressure is undecernable.
Overall, this is my "go to" clamp for panel work. I recommend this brand and size.
One hint; Look for sales on this item. Prices range wildly. I found that if you call the toll free order number, you can get substantial discounts in price and shipping if you order in lots of 4, because the clamps ship in a master case of 4.

Somewhat skeptical after reading some reviews. Mine arrived in good condition, no issues and work perfectly. Only, I found them for two dollars less at Lowe's. Best deal is to buy black iron pipe and clamps at Lowe's, have them cut and thread to length for free. Get some PVC caps for the open ends. Take the pipe home and clean with mineral spirits then wax with auto polish and you have clean non marring clamps. Best of all, 10' of black iron pipe can be cut to lengths and you have nice options.

These pipe clamps are great. Clamping pressure is excellent, and will close difficult joints easily. Compared to Besseys "F" style bar clamps, these pipe clamps produce much more force. It is easy to crank the handle and it doesn't hurt my hands - unlike the F style clamps with small wooden handles. The tall base is a nice touch which keeps you from banging your knuckles when gluing up panels. This feature makes it easier to stagger clamps above and below the panel to keep everything flat. The jaws are padded, and stay in place better than Bessey's F style pads (see caveat below). To build a 36" clamp costs $20, which is half of what parallel clamps cost.

Cons: 1. The lever that releases the clamp should be longer, more ergonomic, and perhaps coated in rubber.
2. The jaw pads leave oily marks on your wood. They do sand off easily, however Bessey should improve this part of their clamps. I feel like this issue will resolve, as it is probably just a petroleum product from manufacturing.
3. Bessey should manufacture their own pipe and include it with the clamps. Black pipe available from home centers reacts with wood glue and will stain your wood black. I would like to see what Bessey could come up with.

The 1/2 pipe size is considerably lighter than 3/4 pipe clamps. I use 36" black pipe nipples from HD. I cleaned the nipples with thinner then applied Johnson's paste wax and let dry. The results are clean smooth and somewhat glue drip resistent.

I have an assortment of woodworking clamps, but find I am using my pipe clamps more and more. When looking for longer clamps, the prices get prohibitive, so pipe clamps offer a reasonable alternative. I get my lengths of pipe at my local plumbing supply, and save money over the big box stores, while getting any length I want cut to size. Some woodworking sources say to use black pipe instead of galvanized. If you do, you're looking for future rust. My galvanized pipes work just fine. I save a few bucks and use 1/2" pipe clamps instead of 3/4. Up to five feet length, I have never had a problem. Two lengths can even be fastened together with a pipe coupler, or sometimes just "hooked" together to get longer lengths.

I have had Bessey before, so I bought more to stay with the brand. They have been easy to use. I gave them four stars this time because the pads are loose on the clamps, and come off too easily...not a problem in the past.

These are a fantastic alternative to traditional clamps. I got these pipe clamps as I do not have any long clamps, and for around $10 I can go to the local hardware store and buy a pipe of whatever length I need for my particular project. Shopping around, I could see there were many clamp sets with varying lengths and long clamps which were fairly expensive. Only needing 4 clamps max for any particular project, I have no need to own a dozen different clamps (not to mention that many of these sets are several hundred dollars). Instead, I got a pair of these, and then went down to the hardware store and bought pipes of different sizes.

Pros:

* Powder coated paint will hold up
* Smooth rotation on the clamp
* Incredibly cheap compared to alternatives

Cons:

* Zinc clutch components seem to float around quite a bit making (does not affect use once pipe is installed, minor complaint)
* Zinc clutch could also grip the pipe with a little more force
* Plastic jaw caps could be higher quality and grip onto the jaw better (these slip around and I have to keep sliding them back into place; maybe a little more rubber in the mix?)

Overall, these are great. While I am not 100% happy with the jaw caps, I am giving this five stars because the low cost more than makes up for this problem. For around a quarter of the cost of a clamp set, I have all of the clamp sizes I will ever need. I have already used for two projects and they have worked perfectly.
