I should probably rate it 3 stars, but I'll explain why. I like the ratcheting mechanism because it's quick and easy to clamp pieces in place, but you do have to squeeze the handle pretty good to get that one extra click in the ratcheting mechanism so it's locked down tight (downside of a ratcheting clamp - if you want precise control, don't get this type of clamp). Minus 1 star for that because it's not really secure unless you give it that extra squeeze. If you have weak or arthritic hands, forget about it, this won't work well for you.

The screws at the pivot points are the problem. One of my clamps came with a screw that didn't fit properly into the female threaded part at the pivoting point. It could be pushed in or pulled out without turning the screw. Unfortunately this rendered the clamp nearly useless because that last click mentioned earlier is where the clamp would fail. I went to the store and exchanged it for another clamp. When I eyeballed the stock on the shelf, I noticed a few other clamps had the same issue. It's sad that such a simple detail couldn't be executed properly. I'd expect this kind of issue with a discount tool store chain, but a Bessey clamp? Regardless, if you get one that works, it should work well. But check those hinge screws to make sure they won't pop out on their own.

I'm not sure how this will hold up over time. I don't expect it to have the longevity of an all metal screw type clamp, but at this price it better not be a throw away in a year (if it is, you will see an update). I suspect it will hold up as long as that pivoting mechanism doesn't fall apart. All in all, I still like it because it's very quick to clamp things down.

I purchased several of these clamps. They have screws that act as hinges and they frequently loosen and cause the clamps to fail. I will never purchase any items from this manufacturer in the future. The Irwin clamps I have purchased are much better quality than the Bessey products.

This design, except for making doll houses, musical instruments, is worthless.

Very cheap plastic rachet design doesn't work...
--- whoever designed this tool never used it in the field...
--- good idea but the plastic rachet mechanism is a total joke.

Unfortunately, the Irwin "Next Generation' clamp is the only...
--- heavy duty 1 hand clamp that really works for daily use at $30.00 per clamp.

I bought the Bessey SCRUS 4 inch clamp to replace my old C-Clamps that had finally bit the dust. The 4 inch clamping capacity of the Bessey provides for all the work I do in the shop with one easy action rather than the continuous "spinning" of the screw on the old C-clamps. I get my work "clamped down" quickly and easily, make the cut, mark or other action, squeeze the quick release trigger and I'm ready for the next job.

I store the clamps on the pegboard in the open position as I fear the spring action may deteriorate over time (I don't use them daily or even weekly), but the space between the clamp and spring seems to work in holding them in place.

I'd recommend these clamps to anyone.

First, this is not a spring clamp. A spring clamp applies its strength through rotation of a torsion spring. The "spring" in this clamp is what is used to open the jaws when the quick-release trigger is pulled. The force applied by this clamp comes from the applied grip strength held by a ratcheting mechanism.

I returned this product for two reasons: not enough clamping force, and not enough grip friction for my applications. I needed a clamp to hold an acrylic cube against a stainless steel plate firmly, without allowing the pieces to move or rotate with respect to each other. However, even when clamping as tightly as possible using this clamp, I was still able to slide the acrylic cube along the plate surface. Further, the friction between the "grip" and the steel plate was not enough to prevent rotation of the clamp (and cube), so this clamp didn't satisfy either of my needs.

This clamp could potentially be useful for very light-duty applications - maybe soft woodworking and the like. But the clamp still rotates at the lightest touch, even when used on wood and plastic materials. There is probably a way to set it up so that the clamp is braced against rotation so this isn't a problem, but that was too much trouble for me.

Mine have not failed. They are plastic and certainly might. If the pivot pin fails I will just replace it with a bolt. I would describe them as light to medium duty in terms of clamping power. If that is what you need, they will work fine. Among other uses,I use them to hold a straight metal bar on to plywood so I can rip it with a circular saw. I also clamp several pieces of wood together so I can cut them to length all at once, instead of one at a time. They work fine to hold glued pieces together and in alignment. They are cheap, useful, and a good addition to your arsenal of clamps. You will find uses for them.

Wish these things worked half as good as they look. They would seem to have they right stuff (metal ratchet ways, solid grip surface, wide/deep jaws) but despite appearances, they don't work function well. The ratchet binds, slips and most of the time does not grip at all. Very frustrating. Bessey is generally a good brand, but not these things. Clearly someone's idea of a decent design being knocked off and produced offshore with little to no quality control. If I could send the two I bought back, I would...too late. Save yourself a headache, buy Irwin.
