5.0 out of 5 stars It really is the BEST 1 for feeding hummingbirds!
Feeding hummingbirds in Southern California means boiling a quart of sugar water every night to keep the feeders full. These feeders are great for the birds, since they allow the birds to perch and rest while feeding. I have had all 8 ports occupied.

It is important to keep the feeders clean, so the hummingbirds do not become ill from bacteria build up. These are the best feeders for easy cleaning.

Also, if a piece accidentally gets broken, replacement parts are easy to order.

Enjoy watching these wonderful birds.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not the best one - only with modifications, May 1, 2007
This review is from: Best-1 32 Ounce Hummingbird Feeder
My husband bought me 2 of these feeders for my birthday. They worked ok. the Hummingbirds used them, but not as much as my others. Mine faded the first season and the words on the outside washed of first thing, which could be a good thing.I was looking through a hummingbird web site and found that these feeders are death traps for the little guys and they had a picture of one of its victims. They said if you modify them, they are usable. To modify, First, from the bottom side of the feeder lid, re-drill each port hole outward at a 45 degree angle. Next, cut or grind the nipple from the underside. If you don't have a grinder, simply used a razor blade to cut down through the nipple at a 45 degree angle. To me it's not worth the risk to my little friends and I shouldn't have to mess around with modifying something before I use it. I do see that there is a hand painted one sold on Amazon that has the modifications made by the company. You can tell the safe feeder because there's 2 perch rings around the outside of the feeder.

5.0 out of 5 stars My personal favorite hummer feeder, September 18, 2006
By
This review is from: Best-1 32 Ounce Hummingbird Feeder
Despite the fact that the Gila Woodpeckers can get at the nectar and are fairly piggish about it, the jar holds a quart, so there's enough to share some. This is a sturdy feeder that's easy to clean & disinfect. There's been a recent influx of migratory fruit bats here, and they can drain even one of these dry in a night, but I like the bats' being here so I'll feed them gladly, too. The only problem I've had is gnats or fruit flies cramming themselves into the bottom by the thousands, but it seems to be highly seasonal and I imagine they could get into any feeder- but they do require some extra attention during those times.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hummers Were Skeptical, August 31, 2006
This review is from: Best-1 32 Ounce Hummingbird Feeder
Purchased this item for larger fluid capacity. Difference in feeding opening design gave me some initial concerns and our huge flock of hummers gave it the cold shoulder at first; preferring their standard fake floral feeder opening feeders. Once one of the smarter or braver souls discovered that the nectar was there also, it became a winner. The greater number of feeding openings can create quite a gathering of multiple hummers eating at one time. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

This is one of the few hummer feeders that the wasps and hornets can't take advantage of. The holes placed on the top of the feeding platform make it impossible for them to get any nectar, so they leave it alone. Also very easy to clean. Well designed! Have been using the Best feeder for 10 years now and still have the first one I ever bought. They are extremely durable and easy to clean and fill. Have also purchased several beautiful blown glass feeders, which the hummers have not responded to very well. They seem to prefer the Best feeder with its perch and easy access to nectar.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best-1, July 23, 2006

I have been using one of these feeders for last 10 years. As of today all my feeders are now Best-1. In Michigan the hummers are only around for 4 months. During this short time the birds needs plenty of clean food. These feeders are easy to disinfect in the spring and keep clean all summer. The sloped IV bottles make them easy to clean with a bottle brush. The base comes apart to rinse out the late season mold and sweat bees. Easy to store, easy to clean and feed, easy to kick back and watch the hummers.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not quite the best one, July 29, 2008
This review is from: Best-1 32 Ounce Hummingbird Feeder
15 years ago I purchased 4 of these feeders, and still have 3 of the originals. The base on these faded quickly to more of a pinkish-red color, and the perches became brittle and began breaking off around the 5th year. I'd say 15 years is a long life for any bird feeder. However, due to the high volume of hummers we accomodate daily, I've also purchased other models of feeders. (75 to 100 hummers all day - we are on a migration path). While this is a good feeder, it is not the "best one". All our newer feeders are the Perky Pet 30-oz with the glass bottle.

4.0 out of 5 stars Birds Love It - But Modifications are Needed and Easy, November 25, 2007
This review is from: Best-1 32 Ounce Hummingbird Feeder
I have had one for a year and it is the best performing hummingbird feeder we've owned. No dripping nectar, large nectar volume, inexpensive, pretty easy to clean (if you own a bottle brush), bug resistant, and the birds literally flock to it.

I was all set to order another when I saw the comments about the bird-safety issues. So I made the recommended modifications (removing the inner of the two perches, and drilling the holes out at a 45 degree angle and smoothing the nipple edge out). The mods took me less than 5 minutes with a 1/8 inch drill and a Dremel. The birds still love it.

The need to make the mods reduces this from 5 stars to 4, but the mods are so easy making them is no big deal and the end result is a good one.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Best-1 32 Ounce Hummingbird Feeder
I had one like this for several years that I bought locally. Simple design, glass bottle, no stupid little yellow flowers around the holes. My only complaint was the difficulty in separating the top of the perch for cleaning. It snapped together real tight and I was always afraid I was going to break it.
This model is identical except that they've solved this perch problem. It filts loosely on top, so it comes off for easy cleaning. Yet it does not leak.
I'm buying a second one.
