Defending silverchair,
By "spawnagain" (Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Best of 1 (Audio CD)
I'd just like to add my two cents worth. There has been a lot of discussion in the media and certain circles that silverchair is a band guilty of plaigarism. This is true only to a certain extent. Yes, 1995's Frogstomp features music we've already heard the formula for, and Daniel Johns does a very impressive impersonation of Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, but does anyone realize that they were 15 at the time? Save child prodigies the likes of Mozart, it is a very uncommon thing for a child to have a distinct musical vision as a kid. Even Mozart played other composer's music as a child, in addition to his own. The mistake was that they were catapulted into fame and stardom at such an early age. With the release of 1997's Freak Show, I am hard-pressed to notice more than shreds of allusions to other bands. They had already carved out a distinct sound in the musical landscape. These songs are raw and, admittedly, in the same vein as grunge. But is that a bad thing? Can we really be proud of the output of nu-metal in the last 8 years? I'd rather have the influence of Kurt Cobain in contemporary music the musical abomination that is Slipknot. Neon Ballroom, in my opinion, is the pinnacle of their career so far. This is diversity the likes of Sgt. Pepper's, and just as powerful. 2001's Diorama, not featured on this best-of compilation, shows further development. Featuring a full orchestra, it shouts with joy and originality. silverchair, this is just to let you know that some people genuinely appreciate your music.

Excellent collection, but the best has yet to come!,
By A. Estes (Maine) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Best of 1 (Audio CD)
'The Best Of Silverchair, Vol 1.' is a snapshot of the band's career during the 90's on the Epic label. Since leaving, they released the brilliant 'Diorama' through Atlantic and keep growing in leaps in bounds. This disc represents Silverchair in many various stages. From the early grunge-cliches of 'Tomorrow' to the more experimental 'Emotion Sickness,' there's something any modern rock fan can recognize and appreciate. All three albums ('Frogstomp,' 'Freakshow' & 'Neon Ballroom') are represented and every song they ever released to radio in the 90's is on here. If you already own the individual albums, there is still reason to buy this CD. We get plenty of b-sides and alternate versions of 'Freak' and 'Anthem For The Year 2000.' Although, the real standout is the acoustic version of 'Ana's Song,' which was necessary. If you are a completist or are new to Silverchair, you should pick this up.

Greatest Hits?,
By Todd Gak (Raleigh, NC United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Best of 1 (Audio CD)
Well I'm really not sure why Silverchair has released a greatest hits album, especially considering that they have only 3 Albums. However, I am glad they did. Because I don't have any of their albums but I have always liked their hits. And I believe if you don't have any of their albums, this greatest hits album is a good way to get all of their good songs, plus some good b-sides with out buying any of their albums. I must say that their cover of Black Flag's "Wasted/Fix Me" is very good and so is their punk rock b-sides that they have done. I was also pleased to see that they put "Untitled" on this album. Which is the song that was on the Godzilla soundtrack.I wouldn't exactly call this album a greatest hits album because there are more re-mixes and rare b-sides on this album than there are hits. However, I do think that it is a good album and I highly recommend it to the people that like their music but don't own any of their albums.
