4.0 out of 5 stars Defending silverchair
I'd just like to add my two cents worth. There has been a lot of discussion in the media and certain circles that silverchair is a band guilty of plaigarism. This is true only to a certain extent.

Yes, 1995's Frogstomp features music we've already heard the formula for, and Daniel Johns does a very impressive impersonation of Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, but does anyone...

3.0 out of 5 stars GREAT COMPILATION FOR A GREAT BAND (3 STARS)
Silverchair has been one of the defining bands of my generation. I remember my friends and I being awe-struck that a pack of kids, no more than 15 years old, could write and produce a disc like they did in 1995 with "Frogstomp." And all the riveting guitar work of "abuse me," the thumping bass line of "Isreal's Son," and the band's first step...

I'd just like to add my two cents worth. There has been a lot of discussion in the media and certain circles that silverchair is a band guilty of plaigarism. This is true only to a certain extent.

Yes, 1995's Frogstomp features music we've already heard the formula for, and Daniel Johns does a very impressive impersonation of Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, but does anyone realize that they were 15 at the time? Save child prodigies the likes of Mozart, it is a very uncommon thing for a child to have a distinct musical vision as a kid. Even Mozart played other composer's music as a child, in addition to his own. The mistake was that they were catapulted into fame and stardom at such an early age.

With the release of 1997's Freak Show, I am hard-pressed to notice more than shreds of allusions to other bands. They had already carved out a distinct sound in the musical landscape. These songs are raw and, admittedly, in the same vein as grunge. But is that a bad thing? Can we really be proud of the output of nu-metal in the last 8 years? I'd rather have the influence of Kurt Cobain in contemporary music the musical abomination that is Slipknot.

Neon Ballroom, in my opinion, is the pinnacle of their career so far. This is diversity the likes of Sgt. Pepper's, and just as powerful.

2001's Diorama, not featured on this best-of compilation, shows further development. Featuring a full orchestra, it shouts with joy and originality.

silverchair, this is just to let you know that some people genuinely appreciate your music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent collection, but the best has yet to come!, July 27, 2003
This review is from: Best of 1 (Audio CD)
'The Best Of Silverchair, Vol 1.' is a snapshot of the band's career during the 90's on the Epic label. Since leaving, they released the brilliant 'Diorama' through Atlantic and keep growing in leaps in bounds. This disc represents Silverchair in many various stages. From the early grunge-cliches of 'Tomorrow' to the more experimental 'Emotion Sickness,' there's something any modern rock fan can recognize and appreciate. All three albums ('Frogstomp,' 'Freakshow' & 'Neon Ballroom') are represented and every song they ever released to radio in the 90's is on here. If you already own the individual albums, there is still reason to buy this CD. We get plenty of b-sides and alternate versions of 'Freak' and 'Anthem For The Year 2000.' Although, the real standout is the acoustic version of 'Ana's Song,' which was necessary. If you are a completist or are new to Silverchair, you should pick this up.

4.0 out of 5 stars Greatest Hits?, December 29, 2000

Well I'm really not sure why Silverchair has released a greatest hits album, especially considering that they have only 3 Albums. However, I am glad they did. Because I don't have any of their albums but I have always liked their hits. And I believe if you don't have any of their albums, this greatest hits album is a good way to get all of their good songs, plus some good b-sides with out buying any of their albums. I must say that their cover of Black Flag's "Wasted/Fix Me" is very good and so is their punk rock b-sides that they have done. I was also pleased to see that they put "Untitled" on this album. Which is the song that was on the Godzilla soundtrack.

I wouldn't exactly call this album a greatest hits album because there are more re-mixes and rare b-sides on this album than there are hits. However, I do think that it is a good album and I highly recommend it to the people that like their music but don't own any of their albums.

I don't know why this album is titled 'Silverchair, The Best Of, Volume 1'. It doesn't contain their best music, and are we to assume there will be more volumes? If so, I hope they aren't like this one. I've heard the band wasn't even involved in the decision to release this album, and disapproved. Here is a track-by-track breakdown:

(1) Anthem for the Year 2000 - A single from their third album, Neon Ballroom.
(2) Freak - A single from their second album, Freak Show.
(3) Ana's Song (Open Fire) - A single from their third album, Neon Ballroom.
(4) Emotion Sickness - Never released as a single, as far as I know. A great song though, from Neon Ballroom.
(5) Israel's Son - A single from their first album, Frogstomp.
(6) Tomorrow - A single from their first album, Frogstomp.
(7) Cemetery - A single from their second album, Freak Show.
(8) The Door - A single from their second album, Freak Show.
(9) Miss You Love - A single from their third album, Neon Ballroom.
(10) Abuse Me - A single from their second album, Freak Show.
(11) Pure Massacre - A single from their first album, Frogstomp.
(12) Untitled - This song was on the soundtrack to the wretched movie Godzilla. Typical Silverchair, alternating between softer melodic parts and extremely heavy parts.
(13) New Race - A fast catchy punk song, and a cover from another band. Not on any of their albums. I like the chorus 'Yeah-eah, Ha! I'm gonna knock you out!'
(14) Trash - A track that was left off Neon Ballroom, probably because it is very similar to the song Spawn Again, with Daniel Johns screaming the whole song through. I like it though.
(15) Ana's Song (Open Fire) (Acoustic Remix) - Just an acoustic version of track #3.
(16) Madman - A different version than the track called Madman on Frogstomp. This one has vocals, which they apparently decided to do without on the album. A really cool song.
(17) Blind - One of the best songs I've heard by them, I can't believe this wasn't on one of their albums.
(18) Punk Song #2 - A fast punk song that was left off of Freak Show.
(19) Wasted/Fix Me - These songs are originally by punk band Black Flag.
(20) Minor Threat - Yet another punk song, this song is by the band Minor Threat.
(21) Freak (Remix for us Rejects) - An interesting remix of the song Freak.

Overall, this is a good album for a Silverchair fan, but of course any fan already has the first 11 tracks at least. There is another album called Rarities which has the last ten tracks on it. I don't know why two different albums were made with these same tracks.

If this was really a 'Best Of' CD, then the rare tracks don't make sense to include, because most people haven't heard any of them before. This seems more like a release with their singles plus some rare stuff to lure fans to buy it. A weird combination. The song Emotion Sickness is the only exception, being a song that really is one of their best and it wasn't a single. An actual 'Best Of' CD, comprising tracks from their first three albums, would have to include more tracks that weren't released as singles but were really great (like Shade, Slave, and Petrol & Chlorine), and not the rare songs.

If you want to really hear Silverchair's best material, then get their latest album, Diorama.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Is A Classic Album, December 25, 2001
This review is from: Best of 1 (Audio CD)
I've liked Silverchair for sometime now, and bought 'Frogstomp' ages ago. I bought this album, and found it to be a highly enjoyable exprience. The only thing wrong with it is that it leaves out classics like 'Suicidal Dream'. Best silverhchair album by far. If you like rock,(nirvana style) then buy this!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not their fault., January 30, 2003
This review is from: Best of 1 (Audio CD)
While I agree this cd is good but lacking some great songs, all of you need to understand why. This album was rushed out to fullfill their album commitment for their label. They did not want to release a greatest hits album with only 3 full albums to their credit. I say we take it for what it is and get ready for the new Silverchair sound they will be bringing after Diorama, without a label holding them back and making their decisions for them. By the way, Isreal's Son is still their best song. And I agree with the guy that suggested the songs on a greatest hits album be chronological to show evolution, good call man.

5.0 out of 5 stars The gold of Silverchair, May 16, 2001
By
This review is from: Best of 1 (Audio CD)
One of the best compilations ever released. They actually don't have tens of their albums, but anyway, it's always a big task to put all the masses' favourite songs on one cd. This time it worked, and worked well, especially considering all those really interesting b-sides that are also present on "Vol.1".

Most of what you have liked about Silverchair, i.e. their undisputable songwriting talent, their usual energy and passion, their real feelings that are clearly shown in every word and sound of their songs, that all is right here, on this cd.

And of course, the best of their songs, including fabulous Tomorrow, epic Emotion Sickness, glorious Anthem for the Year 2000, fragile Miss You Love, and astounding Ana's Song (as well as many others like Untitled, Israel's Son, Freak, Pure Massacre and Abuse Me) are all ready to give a good chance to enjoy a really professional and beautiful music.

Have no doubt, the cd is easily worth your buying.

Silverchair has been one of the defining bands of my generation. I remember my friends and I being awe-struck that a pack of kids, no more than 15 years old, could write and produce a disc like they did in 1995 with "Frogstomp." And all the riveting guitar work of "abuse me," the thumping bass line of "Isreal's Son," and the band's first step in the limelight with "Tomorrow" are all on "The Best of: Volume One."

Hopefully, the band is suggesting with the album's title it will be around for a long time to come. Long enough to produce a second (perhaps third) Greatest Hits disc. All the songs are great here. You get the highlights of the band's studio albums without having to switch discs around. Perfect, also for the Silverchair newcomer.

I was thrilled when I heard about this album. Imagine getting an album with songs like "Theme for 2000" and "Tomorrow" on it. Thought I was in heaven.... Excited to see what this band will put out in the future.

3.0 out of 5 stars Unclear Picture Of Silverchair's 3 album run for Murmur, April 3, 2004

Michael Borg (Melbourne Australia) - See all my reviews

This CD is all over the place, most best of's begin at the first hit/single then progress on to the newer stuff so you can hear the growth of a band, not only is this missing "Shade" (released as a single) it has Emotion Sickness on it sure its not a bad song but i don't ever recall it being a single, also this contains the album version of Tomorrow from Frogstomp, the original Tomorrow that was a hit can be found on the Tomorrow EP same goes for Anthem For The Year 2000 (the single mix is found on the Anthem For The Year 2000 Single, that is the version of the song that was the hit not the album version).
If your new to Silverchair however and want to get into them this would be a good starting point before you progress onto the 2002 era music.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not Ready for the Greatest Hits, August 2, 2002

I was never really interested in purchasing Silverchair's cds, however when I saw the video and and heard Ana's song, Silvercahir became very appealing to me. I purchased the cd recently and I find it a little odd to have a greatest hits album after just 3 cds made. Overall the songs are very good: Freak and Tomorrow are some of my favorites. Some songs could use some help like Trash and the Punk song. Daniel Jones has a very fragile, vibrant voice with good vocal variations which is what makes this album good. Some of the lyrics could also be a little too easy such as Anthem of 2000. I respect Daniel for his sucess at such an early age and I hop e he will continue to make more albums with even better aspects. This album is great for people who wants to a feel of how Silverchair musisc is like.
