A Great Introduction to a Jazz Legend,
By dls31@cornell.edu (Washington, DC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Best Of: 1931-44 (Audio CD)
This smart compilation of tunes from Webster's prime features the tenor great performing in good form with such jazz giants as Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Johnny Hodges, and perhaps best of all, Billie Holiday. The album is just what you'd expect: Webster is typically gruff and virile on stomps, breathy and romantic on ballads. A great introduction for those unfamiliar with Webster's work, and a nice gathering of classic Webster interpretations for the advanced jazz listener.
