Wild!,

I too join the ranks of music nuts who longed to see the day when ABK would finally let the cameo/parkway catalog see the light of day. Well that day is finally here! Dee Dee Sharp is a fine singer who deserved to see her work relased on CD, and all her great hits are here! My personal favorite is "Wild!" with a cha cha sound unlike any of the other tracks. There are some latter (mid sixties) gems which are worth hearing, this was a time when Dee Dee was being produced by Gamble (her eventual husband) and Huff. But listen to "Never Pick a Pretty", which mostly sounds like the female take on Jimmy Soul's "If you wanna be happy" The CD is a great buy and a necessary addition to your collection. The sound quality is great as well as the sound selection. I am glad Dee Dee's work is once again available to the buyers on a legit release.

The wait is over. This collection brings us the official release of the original Cameo recordings of the label's most successful female solo artist. The set consists of 24 tracks total, all in mono, including all ten of Dee Dee's Hot 100 hits. You get her six top 40 hits, plus album cuts and several non-charting singles. A couple of interesting songs are the remakes "You Are My Sunshine" (a top ten hit for Ray Charles in '62) and "To Know Him Is To Love Him" (a #1 smash for the Teddy Bears in '58). The version of Dee Dee's top five hit with Chubby Checker that is included here is her album version (not the hit single version). The digital sound is first-rate. A four page essay (written by Jeff Tamarkin, who also authored the essay for the Cameo Parkway box set released in May 2005) plus five pages of credits and chart info detail her short career. Most fans and collectors will be satisfied (you can't beat the price). Highly recommended.

Some gems here. "Never Pick a Pretty Boy" and "Deep Dark Secret" compliment all the other Top 40 hits on this package.
Great Philly sound.

Dee Dee Sharp had one of the biggest dance hits of the 1960s called "Mashed Potato Time" (#5 on the Billboard's Pop charts, along with "Slow Twisting") at the tender age of 16!!!! This is a great collection by Cameo-Parkway (1962-1966) containing 24 finger snapping and head bopping songs. Dee Dee's was followed up with "Gravy (For My Mashed Potatoes)," which went to #9 on the charts and no sooner was off she went to tour with Dick Clark. The more soulful sounding "Ride" charted in the top 10, and was followed by "Do The Bird" in 1963.
All the songs on this CD definitely represent the type of music that was popular during the 60s, many of which were focused around major dance crazes across the US and abroad. As Dee Dee matured, so did her voice and thankfully this cd has Dee Dee singing some R&B/Soulful ballards. The cd comes with good liner notes and is fun to listen to. For those who those who are familiar with the voice of Dee Dee Sharp (Gamble) in the 1970s, this will be an excellent addition to your collection as you go down memory lane.

Dee Dee Sharp is one of the most underrated singer in the history of Rhythm & Blues. Beginning with her first chart hit, the million selling "Mashed Potato Time," Cameo Parkway underutilized her talent by pigeonholding her in similar dance and teen pop music. So you can listen to the cd and put some "gravy" on your mashed potatoes, " "ride!" and "do the bird" until you're exhausted and then relax and listen to her outstanding vocals on the ballads "I Really Love You" and "It's A Funny Situation." The cd is worth the money for these two tracks alone. You can hear Dee Dee rival many of her musical peers on these tracks.

Many years ago, I lost my Dee Dee Sharp record albums and .45s. I always wanted to rip this music to my Mac and Windows computers.
I bought this CD and it was wonderful to hear this music again from when I was young. Dee Dee sounds better on this CD than she ever did on records. Anyone who loves music from the 50s and 60s will absolutely love this CD. Mashed Potato Time and Gravy and real toe-tappers. |
