Biography

Biography by Alex Henderson

Best known for their work with Chic in the late '70s, siblings Debbie, Kim, Joni, and Kathy Sledge -- collectively Sister Sledge -- reached the height of their popularity during the disco era but had been recording since the early '70s and were still active in the late '90s. The group was formed in Philadelphia in 1971, when the sisters' ages ranged from 12 to 16, and… Read more in Amazon's Sister Sledge Store

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for any music lover....., March 2, 1999
This review is from: Best of 1973-1985 (Audio CD)
Sisters Debbie, Joni, Kim and Kathy Sledge prove that they are more than just disco divas with this 18 song release that hi-lights the best days of their career. Though the first few tracks are from their teeny bopper days, by the end of this musical journey you will see that these ladies have evolved both musically and personally into full fledged women. Beginning with their biggest hits, the hypnotizing "He's The Greatest Dancer" that many are getting 'jiggy' with today and an eight minute version of "We Are Family" that sounds more like a gospel revival than a disco hit, with youngest sister Kathy's rousing vocals upfront will keep you dancing. Sister Joni's pleas of being "Lost In Music" could have been a very fitting title for this collection. A familiar sounding "Got To Love Somebody" gives Kathy another chance to cut loose, vocally that is. A very jazzy, yet funky "Reach Your Peak" features an irresistable string and sax solo with the sisters reaching their vocal peaks in perfect harmony. The sisters even try their hands, successfully I might add, with reggae on the track "He's Just A Runaway". Taking a moment to hang up their dancing shoes, the sisters slow things down with a delicious remake of the Motown classic, "My Guy" and the original version of the beautiful "All The Man I Need" which became a hit several years too late for Whitney Houston. The pleading "Got To Get Back To Love" shows a side of the sisters that many don't get a chance to see often. With strong productions, tight vocals and diverse musical styles, this collection is a must have on a group that has never really reached the peak that they really deserved.

4.0 out of 5 stars A collection of classics, November 9, 2001
This review is from: Best of 1973-1985 (Audio CD)
A collection featuring 7" versions and two gems in their full-length versions : « We are family » (8 minutes) and « He's the greatest dancer » (6 minutes). Besides, the booklet is excellent. For the real fans there is a reissue of the album « We are family » with « Lost in music » unedited and four remixes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic disco soul sound, June 14, 2005

This disc shows how much more disco had to offer than conventional wisdom (= stupidity) would have you believe. The sisters are powerhouse vocalists, the hooks irresistible, the production (by the great Chic dude Nile Rodgers) brilliant. There's an edge and a depth here in the anthemic tunes (We Are Family, All American Girls) that make them a pleasure to hear and dance to long after disco's demise. Underrated masterpiece: Lost in Music, with its commanding vocals, hypnotic guitarwork, and blistering groove. Go Sisters!
