5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the Radio Fan
Let me first be absolutely clear--I'm not a fan of 'Best of's for the true fan of an artist of band. Let me be absolutely clear about something else--I've never been a U2 fan. I don't turn them off when they're on the radio, but in over 25 years of buying music, I never felt compelled to purchase one of their records.

Until now.

3.0 out of 5 stars A good but rusty, & shoddily assembled collection.
This collection of 14 tracks from U2's 80s heyday, musically speaking, is a great collection of U2 songs, but however, this collection is not worth the fortune on the import version and don't be fooled by the bonus track, it's just an extra track.

The 2-CD on the other hand with the B-Sides disc is absolutely priceless. All of the 15 B-Sides on that edition are...

This collection is perfect for what I call 'the Radio Fan.' This is a person not concerned with the genesis of a project, or of how an album fits together, or of hearing the chronological progression of a band's sound. It's simply U2's best known tracks from the 80s, presented, seemingly, in order of popularity rather than chronologically or with an eye to an overall aesthetic for the album. It's a 15-song sampling of the group during those years, and for those of us who never really cared about them beyond what we heard on the radio or saw on MTV (oh, for the days when they played videos!), this collection is just about perfect.

Highlights include...well, just about the whole thing, since it's a "Best of," but my personal favorites are "Sunday, Bloody Sunday," and Pride (In the Name of Love)." Both songs are infectious with that distinctive U2 chime and Bono's just-short-of-a-breakdown histrionic vocals. Good, catchy stuff.

There's absolutely nothing here for the true fan of U2--no B-sides, no alternate takes, no remixes, no demos. Just those radio songs that people like me remember fondly.

So, for the true fan who owns all the albums and sets--0 stars.

For the Radio Fans of the band--5 stars.

Recommended for nostalgic children of the 80s.

I bought the 2CD version of this collection for much less here in Amazon, WITH the B-Sides, don't get fooled this is not the 2CD collection it is only the original (just imported). It may be imported but not worth all that much more!

However the "limited" version 2CD (which I posted a review to it) it's really worth every penny and it's beautiful. Shouldn't be left out of any U2 collection. The B-Sides itself is priceless.

The only thing new that this single disc edition offers is the 'new' song "Sweetest Thing" which is a re-recording of a B-Side and the newer version can be found on the double album version and the older version on the B-Sides CD.

If you want this collection, go for the 2 CD version but this import edition is not worth the fortune compared to the worthy price of the domestic edition of the 2-CD edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars U2 best of 1980-1990 2cd Japanese release, April 6, 2011
This review is from: Best Of 1980-1990 (Audio CD)
it seems that there must be a better way to catagorize items for sale here @ Amazon. for instance, the item shown should be listed, by Amazon-even if it's not @ the time available-with its' proper & correct picture, release date, CAT #, barcode & trackilsting.

the item shown here, with the blue obi strip, is the Japanese re-release of this title. i believe is was released in Japan during the year 2002. here's what i know; the original Japanese release of this title was released oct 28th, 1998 (98-10-28). the CAT # is PHCR-90715/6. the barcode # is 4988011361296. while i cannot read Japanese, i do know that the obi strip of the original Japanese release is black with red sections @ & on the obi's front top & bottom. the re-release/re-issue is the blue obi. as for the tracks on the 1998 Japanese release: disc 1 has 15 tracks with the last track being 'one tree hill'. disc 2, the 'b-sides' disc, also has 15 tracks, ending with 'trash, trampoline and the party girl'.

i have been 'collecting' for awhile now & many times i find it difficult to know what exactly is being listed for the lack of proper descriptions. if Amazon started listing pictures, CAT #s & barcode #s, things might become a bit easier in that aspect.

I love every song on this CD. Thanks U2, this disc still gets rocked in my MP3 player. Years and years after I first got it.

2.0 out of 5 stars (...), October 31, 2001
This review is from: Best of 1980-1990 (+1 Bonus Track) (Audio CD)
I bought this while in (...) Spain thinking "bonus" meant the B sides (...) I think the "B sides" one didn't cost that much more. The extra track was "October," a beautiful song but it doesn't make the CD a special find. It's also lacking great songs like "Two Hearts Beat as One" and "Out of Control."

4.0 out of 5 stars GOOD, but a little RUSTY, March 7, 2000
This review is from: Best of 1980-1990 (+1 Bonus Track) (Audio CD)
Welches, I guess the import isn't really worth it, unless you BUY it while your at the other country. The extra cost isn't really worth that 1 or 2 extra songs, but nethertheless, it is AWESOME, just because its U2. THey are the BOMB. Trust me, U2 can spur out some pretty impressive stuff, my personal favorite is "Sweetest Thing" and "Pride(in the name of love)"

Purchased this "album" from Amazon.com. Had to download a downloader to get purchase. Downloader did not work, never got music. Good luck getting tech support from Amazon. With iTunes there's 800 numbers I could call at Apple, not that I ever had to.
