2.0 out of 5 stars The 50 best? Nah!, September 18, 2008
By
the_good_cookie (Sydney, Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Best 50 Fudge Recipes (Paperback)
With a title like the `50 Best Fudge Recipes' (from the 50 best series) you can understand why my expectations were high. Unfortunately the "50 best fudge recipes" book falls well short.

Firstly the book contains no pictures. When flicking through the tiny book (it measures just 15cm x 11cm) you feel lucky that the publisher even bothered to put a picture on the cover at all. And one must ask the question is that brownies on the cover or fudge?
More importantly for the novice fudge-maker is that the book provides only two minuscule pages on the `simple success to fudge making' and then dives right into the recipes. It's clear that this book isn't for beginners as they would definitely struggle to produce a good batch of fudge with such limited know-how provided.

The recipes themselves are more like a quickly compiled collection - a collection which lacks clarity and soul. For example one must ask whether the "no-cook peanut butter fudge" included is really a recipe for fudge?
Or whether the Potato Fudge included could possibly be better than notable absentees such as Peaches and Cream Fudge, Strawberry and Cream Fudge or Mango Fudge. The editor of the collection has included a brief one line introduction to each fudge recipe - and all the recipes instructions are no more than one to two paragraphs.

Overall the book is a good source of ideas, but not recipes. Fudge making is not something the novice cook can master without thoroughly tested recipes, clear and in-depth instructions and insightful tips. The book would make a good stocking filler for Christmas or item for a gift basket.

Pros: The book has some interest recipes `Cranberry Opera Fudge' and `Cherry Cream Fudge.' It also appears that 65 recipes for fudge are included not 50! The books two page index is organised alphabetical and divided into blondies, nut fudge, chocolate fudge and divinity etc.

Cons: No history is provided on fudge making or information about the different types of fudge. No tips are provided to avert failure or avoid making the same mistakes again ie what to do if your fudge is grainy. Recipe instructions are extremely vague.

Recipes included:

1. Butterscotch Fudge
2. Chocolate Coconut Fudge

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, June 6, 2007
This review is from: The Best 50 Fudge Recipes (Paperback)
I had such high hopes for this book. Most of the recipes sound delicious. I am by no means a novice fudge-maker, but none of the reciped I tried from this manual turned out.
