All the songs I wanted are here.,
By
This review is from: Best of the 60's (Audio CD)
All the songs that I wanted are here:
( 1 ) Time of the Season, which can be heard on the film Awakenings, starring Robin Williams and Robert De Nero. ( 2 ) Tell Her No. ( 3 ) She's Not There. ( 4 ) Summertime. For those who are not sure that they like the operatic vocal style, i.e., Porgy and Bess, this version of Summertime is an excellent way to get your George Gershwin. Track #14, "Whenever You're Ready," sounds a bit like "I'll be Back," from the Beatles' Hard Day's Night. Whenever You're Ready could have been a hit in its own right, in my opinion. I also believe that track #16, Remember You, could have been a hit if it had been given airplay in the 1960s. One problem though with this compilation is that the sound quality is harsh. At times, the piano sound is distorted. The presentation of the sound also seems to lack any 3-dimensional effect. I compared She's Not There from this compilation with that on a Time-Life compilation, Classic Rock 1964. The version on the Time-Life compilation is beautiful, with a nice 3-dimensional effect in the presentation of the sound, and with no harshness whatsoever. The 5 stars go to the timeless classics, mentioned above. But the sound quality deserves two stars.

This is the best Zombie compilation on the market today. This cd has great tracks. I'm a huge Zombies fan, and I have many of their albums. This is the one that stands out from the others. This has the rock, jazz, r&b, the works. The only other Zombies album that could come close to this one is the other Zombies best of import, but that one is too school boy if you know what I mean. I guess only true Zombies fans know what that means. This is a great look at The Zombies music.

Worth every penny.
Best of's and compilations are for housewives... or for listening in the car. This CD is a good spread covering the career of the Zombies. If you're new to the Zombies, than this is a great introduction. Got the hits, got some jazzy stuff, some blues standards, plus a Smokey Robinson cover. Now you can get a copy for $9 after shipping. 18 for $9 is quite a deal.

If a compilation begins with "The Best Of ..." you can almost be positive that it isn't. That isn't to say this album doesn't have the Best of the Zombies, but the problem is, the Zombies just weren't a monolithic band. They don't need an entire CD of hits, and the CD CERTAINLY doesn't need to be titled as "The Best of the 60s." Their version of "Summertime" is an interesting take, and "She's Not There" is a sleeper hit, gaining a bit more recognition with its use (although a cover) in "Kill Bill, Vol 2." "Time of the Season" is a must on a Zombies CD, but they really should've left "You've Really Got a Hold on Me" to Smokey.
All in all, it's probably worth the less than $10 that you'll spend on it when you find it, but always, as in any compilation CD of essentially one-hit wonder bands, be aware that there are more duds than masterpieces. Especially when they begin with "The Best Of ..." |
