Non essential for the fans - but for the newcomer?, August 17, 2006

OK I'm going to be really short and sweet on this one. This is a concise collection of Malmsteens high points of the 90's with a few glaring omissions. First the good points.
- Cool selection of tunes from the fast rockers like Seventh Sign and Never Die to blazing instrumentals like Blue and even something from his 'classical' album in Cavalino Rampante.
- The tunes don't grate when put up against each other.
- A couple of live renditions of tunes to break things up and the amusing cover of ABBA's Gimme Gimme Gimme (yes really!).
- Insightful liner notes from sometime Kerrang scribe Mark Greenaway.
The downsides are few - main one being that there are no tunes from 1990's Eclipse or Fire and Ice presumably due to licensing issues. Thus we can't have Bedroom Eyes or Final Curtain.
Regardless this is a great disc to pick up for the casual rock fan - quite possibely the way to go would be to get your hands on The Yngwie Malmsteen Collection and this and have pretty much a snapshot of his solo career up to 1999. For those fans who already own the albums like me this is perhaps of limited appeal unless you REALLY want that ABBA cover version.
This isn't a bad albut but I can only justify three stars due to it's potentially limited appeal.

Great Album a must have with some things missing though, May 12, 2009

Yngwie Malmsteen is basically my guitar hero. I listen to alot of guitarists that are not just shred like Van Halen, Metallica, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, ect. So I am not a neo-classical only nerd. Song by song this is what I think:
-Gimme Gimme Gimme - I dont know the original but I LOVE this song
-Never Die - Epic song, heard it a few two many times but its a great song w/ awesome riff work and a solo that kills
-Brothers - Extremely emotional song, probably one of Yngwie's most emotional songs since Black Star and Icarus Dream Opus 4 (on the 1st CD "rising force)
-Seventh Sign - Epic, enough said
-Vengence - Just amazing solo, riff work, mike versera was great for this song and the 2 albums he was on. He is now with reign of terror, unfortuately we have tim Ripper owens now with Yngwie's stuff.
-Voodoo - Best track on the whole cd. The solo is the most insane solo i've ever heard besides maybe Magic and Mayhem from Unleash the Fury or Caprici Di Diablo. The whole song is good though, very strong riff work. Just the verses arent as powerful but it adds a very epic feel.
-Facing the Animal - Very slow riff work in the beginning, probably one of the lower parts of this CD. I personally am not a fan of that singer compared to the others.
-Like an Angel - Very emotional balad, one of my favorites to jam with. Definitely a great addition.
-Another Time - First time i heard this song first thing came to mind is CLASSIC! This song is literally about as 80's as you can get but its in that awesome way. I love the lyrics, they are just awesome.
-Rising Force - well... Shoulda kept joe lynn turner or get a better singer for this track... otherwise its decent version. But compared to JLT this guy is nothing.
-Gates of Babylon - Havent really listened to it much yet.
-Blue - Very good song if your into blues but want that Yngwie feel still
-Hanger 18, Area 51 - VERY VERY VERY EPIC! This song is just awesome in every since of the word. Mark Boals was one of his best singers ever for sure.
-Cavallino Rampante - Like the live version a lil better, but still very good song if you love classical music. This is the live version but it just seems a lil bit mixed and not as live and natural as it was on the DVD.
