4.0 out of 5 stars Growly Sax & The Bump and Grind
Ace Cannon was -- and still is (see acecannon.com) -- the godfather of the saxophone. His funky, gritty style of honking influenced not only generations of similar saxophone stylists but also arguably the whole seamy side of rock 'n roll -- everyone from Questionmark & The Mysterians to George Thorogood (i.e. the anti-Debby Boone orientation).

3.0 out of 5 stars I like it....
....it's a good straight-ahead tenor sax CD. Well notated and pretty good overview of Ace Cannon's career. I like the way he plays melody. Critics have called this "red-neck jazz". I disagree - I listen to it all the time. Love that Memphis - Hi Records sound!

This compilation sounds a little too clean & stereo (one wonders if it's all re-recordings like the similar Bill Black Combo comp on Hi) but it's still a good budget-priced introduction to a living legend.

Born in 1934, Ace Cannon is known as the Godfather of Sax. He has had numerous hits, including the popular "Tuff". Ace Cannon has recorded so much music, music known to all, rock, blues, country, pop, etc., all with with the sensual sound of the sax.

I bought this CD specifically for one song, "Funny". The song was a hit in the late 60's, a most beautiful song, a profound soothing sound of the sax. But what is here is NOT the original, which lends me to believe that none of the songs are original. No version can ever compare to the original "Funny". We played that in the jukebox constantly.

The music is relaxing, and what is here is mostly versions of the classic rock & roll songs. Surprisingly, Cannon does a 1924 country song by Vernon Dalhart "The Prisoner's Song". This song truly is considered in the Greatest Country Music Recording of All Time - The Birth of Country. And he covers Johnny Cash "I Walk The Line". There is a variety here and especially with some blues interspersed.

This is an enjoyment, but will never surpass some of the original sounds of Ace Cannon....Rizzo
