I now look forward to the publication of this anthology every year. This time, electronic media is included, with a couple of surprisingly good entries from blogs. Also, a couple of these articles had direct effects on the outside world: "The Runaway General"led to the resignation of General McChrystal, while "Innocence Lost" led to the release of a Texas man convicted on extremely flimsy evidence. There is a huge variety of material here, from Christopher Hitchens' columns on living with cancer to portraits of Joan Rivers and the first person diagnosed with autism. Even poetry and fiction are (briefly) included.

I'm a huge fan of these yearly collections of 'best writing'. I use the Best American Essays as a reader for an advanced expository writing class, and the students enjoy the breadth of topics and forms there. This is sort of a sampler of the Best Essays series, including food writing, sports writing, travel writing as well as the standard 'essay'. As such it's a lot of variety for a very, very small price.

Kindling this collection made me buy the Food Writing anthology as well, because the selections included were that good and fun to read! So, be warned, this may be a gateway drug to great reading.

Book was in great condition, looked barely even thumbed through. Needed it for a college course text, read it, almost fell in love with the short stories inside. so unexpected. Anyway, I recommend reading it even outside of class. It arrived pretty soon, within a week, well packaged. Great price for an unexpectedly good buy.
