Classy compilation from classy lady, January 3, 2000

Amii Stewart became a disco queen with her #1 hit record "Knock On Wood" and she's often been described as a one-hit wonder because of that. She settled in Italy in the early 80s and signed a deal with RCA for whom she recorded five albums from 1983 to 1990, and this essential collection is compiled from these years. Opening with the dramatic "Working Late Tonight" from her self-titled 1983 album, the CD continues with pop of the finest class. Her beautiful 1984 "Try Love" album is represented with the wonderful, superbly sung "Friends" (that gave her a #12-hit in the U.K.) as well as the lovely title track and the sultry "That Loving Feeling". Her 1986 album "Amii" provided sharp, streamlined designerpop, produced by Giorgio Moroder and the Dutch Bolland & Bolland brothers (of Status Quo "In The Army Now" fame), and the highlights "Time Is Tight" and "Break These Chains" are also included on this CD. Her 1988 "Time For Fantasy" album was more in the laid-back mood of the "Try Love" album, delivering the splendid "Dusty Road" and "It's Fantasy". Besides, it is also on that album that the original version of Mariah Carey's Top 10-hit "I Still Believe" can be found, and there's no doubt which version I prefer. Amii's last RCA album was a collaboration with the Italian film score legend Ennio Morricone, and the resulting "Pearls" album is a marvellous fairytale-like album, from which "Saharan Dream" closes this collection. Amii Stewart is a highly underestimated singer with a wonderful, crystalclear voice, she's controlling her voice perfectly, and yet she's emotional and expressive. Do also check out her 90s albums and share one of this world's well kept secrets, a remarkably talented lady - Amii Stewart!
