Brief Overview of the Queen of Soul, September 28, 2004
This review is from: Best of (Audio CD)
Aretha Franklin's first collection of hits is represented with this CD, which was originally released in 1968. Many of her best songs from the 1960s are here: "I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)" (#9 in 1967), "Respect" (#1 for 2 weeks in 1967), "Chain of Fools" (#2 in 1968), "Think" (#7 in 1968), and "I Say a Little Prayer" (#10 in 1968). I particularly enjoy "I Never Loved a Man" as it hasn't been played as much on oldies radio as "Respect" and some of her other hits.
The CD has obviously been updated several times, as a number of her hits from the 1970s are here as well, including the sublime "Until You Come Back to Me (That's What I'm Gonna Do)" from 1973. In addition, a few top-notch, non-hits are included - most notably "Do Right Woman - Do Right Man."
Every song is a classic; however, she had so many more hits that this CD seems woefully inadequate. A number of other CDs include more great songs, including 2001's "Aretha's Best" (which has its own flaws). I bought this CD more than a decade ago and subsequently bought "Aretha's Best" to augment my collection. Recommended for casual fans of Aretha or classic soul music.

THIS COLLECTION WORKS REAL WELL, IF YOU TRYING TO GIVE IT AS A GIFT, February 6, 2009

You'll find this as low as TEN-CENTS! UNDERSTAND that doesn't mean that there is something wrong with this! It's just a QUICK-FIX on her HITS! The Gold #1 Billboard Hit Singles: "I Never Loved A Man", "Respect", "Chain Of Fool", "Think",
"Spanish Harlem", and "Until You Come Back To Me". Then you get the All-Time Billboard Top Ten favorites: "A Natural Woman", "I Say A Little Prayer", and
"Rock Steady". Then you get the Classic B-Sides: "Dr. Feelgood", and "Do Right Woman-Do Right Man" and a Album Favorite "Save Me". If you REALLY want to make yourself or someone REALLY happy invest in the Atlantic Records BOX SET! You do know we are talking about THE QUEEN OF SOUL??? So how many hits could they (Atlantic) put on one Compact Disc?

Just a taste of a great artist, October 11, 2008

The Queen of Soul has produced so many memorable songs that this cd only has a fraction of her work. The songs that are here are wonderful and indicative of her tremendous range. Aretha Franklin never sings the same song the same way so it's always worth checking into her live versions. The MP3 versions are a good way to get your favorites without getting the whole album. She doesn't give to many concerts, a pity. I am grateful though that she has lived so long and continues to produce great vocals.
