5.0 out of 5 stars The 60's...revisited
In an age in which tecno-pop or country dominates the airaves...this is a breath of fresh air. A collection of tunes with with a fanciful wit and sense of humor...magnificently performed. "Alice's Restaurant" and "Comin' in to Los Angeles" alone are worth the price of this CD...but there is even more.

Few people remember Arlo Guthrie...but he remains a genius...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for a once-a-decade listen
Arlo Guthrie is best known for four songs. They are all here -- "Alice's Restaurant," "The Motorcycle Song," "City of New Orleans" and "Coming into Los Angeles." What's curious is that he no longer sings the first two (overdone), didn't write the third, and the fourth is about smuggling illegal drugs into the country. An interesting batch of hits! The rest of the tunes...

A very good cd for ADG fans. Has all his good songs. I really enjoy the "Motorcycle Song" since I ride a Harley. It is always playing in my truck.

What would Thanksgiving be without Alice's Resturant????? This CD is really a joy to listen to, and even though Arlo has done many great things since this "Best OF" came out, this continues to be a favorite. Do yourself a favor and follow it up with Arlo live in Australia, it brings you full circle. Arlo is a treasure, enjoy!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly The Best Of Arlo Guthrie, December 21, 2008
This review is from: The Best of Arlo Guthrie (Audio CD)
GREATEST HITS is a 2007 reissue of 1977's THE BEST OF ARLO GUTHRIE. Even though it's missing some great songs, there's enough indispensible stuff here to make this CD a great place to start building an Arlo Guthrie library. He proves himself to be the true heir to his late, illustrious father, the great Woody Guthrie, and as such acquits himself wonderfully. Guthrie's opposition to countries that falsely convict foreign visitors on trumped-up charges makes this CD an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

We bought this CD for our brother in law and it arrived just before Thanksgiving - just in time for Alices Restaurant to be played at high noon on Thanksgiving. Perfect timing.

The rest of the tunes are well-performed, but mostly unmemorable. Arlo is a talented guitarist, but I dislike his smarty-pants pose. I confess that neither his stories nor his music are particularly compelling. One exception is "Gabriel's Mother's Hiway Ballad #16 Blues" which is a bluesy gospel tune that almost had heart. Of the hits, his wistful rendition of "City of New Orleans" is an American classic.

I picked up this CD to hear "Alice's Restaurant," which believe it or not, I had never heard, though I knew the tune since the early 1970s. A fun CD, I guess, for the occasional listen, but not interesting enough for the iPod rotation. Pick this up if you are a fan. Otherwise, plunk down 99 cents at the Apple store for the couple of decent cuts.

2.0 out of 5 stars one good track, December 9, 2009

It was so whimsically cool & cute when I loved it in the sixties. Now it seems superficial self indulgent drivel - particularly the overlong Alice's Restaurant. Buy the single track of the still great "City of New Orleans" and save yourself some money.
