Talking about a hard job to do!,
By A Customer
This review is from: Best of Artist of the Century (Audio CD)
Imagine having to pick from all of Elvis' great songs and compile a 3 cd set. Tough job. Now imagine taking the "best" songs from that set and making a single cd. Difficult to say the least. This is a great collection for novice fans, general music lovers, and diehards like me who buy just about every Elvis CD that comes out. Great packaging and great sound. Sure I already have the box set...But like I said this is a great set for beginners and the general public. I like that it's not totally 1956 focused like a lot of greatest hits packages have been over the years. This is sure to please!

I'm a life long Elvis fan. I own all the box sets including Artist Of the Century And I still bought this collection because it edits the 3 Cd set down to (argueably) the best of the best. This is the best single disc overview of Elvis' career currently available. This is what I put in my player when I want to hear the very best of the Hundreds of songs Elvis recorded. '

A definitive one CD recap of Elvis' career,

Okay, so there's lot a great material not on this compilation. But there is a fairly even number of songs from each of the major periods of his career. It's rather hard to choose a definite dividing line between periods, but basically, The first six songs are the young Elvis, and include "That's All Right" and "Baby, Let's Play House", which don't appear on as many collections as the others. 7-13 cover development of his voice and style, including the less often heard "One Night," "Trouble," and "Reconsider, Baby". 14-18 represents a return to the type of song the younger Elvis sang, but with a developed style...all of these being less commonly heard: "Little Sister", "Return to Sender", "(You're the) Devil In Disguise", "It Hurts Me", and "Big Boss Man". Cuts 19-25 include the fully mature Elvis with "In the Ghetto", "Only the Strong Survive", "Polk Salad Annie", "An American Trilogy", "Burning Love", and "Promised Land" along with the longer version of "Suspicious Minds". So this is an excellant first Elvis CD for your collection, but even if you already have one or two CD's, you'll probably find that you're missing about 2/3 of the material available on this collection.

The first two songs are on this cd was not recored for RCA (but they are on here anyways). The songs are That's All Right and Baby, Let's Play House. Elvis recored those songs for Sun Studios.Heartbreak Hotel is on this too. And it's mostly on his other cds (But not on Christmas cd). It whould be odd if you bought any Elvis Presley cd and Heartbreak Hotel was not on it. There are aslo rare songs that on this cd, like In The Ghetto, Little Sister, Can't Help Falling In Love, and Polk Salad Annie. Aslo on this cd is Burning Love and It Hurts Me. If you know somebody that doesn't have this cd and it is a big Elvis fan. There you go.

Long Time Fan,

Here we go again. BMG has issued yet another useless product. The same songs over and over again. This time an edited version of Artist of the Century Cd. While BMG keeps allowing alternate takes and unreleased material to be issued in Denmark and other European countries. We in the U.S. get the junk at high prices. Poor compilations of old material issued to death. BMG does not concider the U.S. fan to be important enough to release a fresh and creative product to. Elvis was better than this and the U.S. fan is too. Only a handful of good CD's have been issued in the last two years here in the states. Who ever picks the material for these projects should be replaced with someone that knows more about Elvis and his legacy in music and what the U.S. fan wants.

Elvis IS the greatest Artist of the Century. Nice title. But you wouldn't know it by the collection of songs on this CD. 25 songs...24 if you consider that "Promised Land" is included twice (probably due to it being on the 'Men In Black' soundtrack). Out of those 24 songs, a whopping THREE SONGS came from his 70's collection...which many people feel is a LOT better than his 50's collection. Any big Elvis fan will tell you that part of his appeal is listening to how his music, voice, and delivery changed over the years. Songs from the 50's are nothing like the early 60's, which are nothing like the late 60's, which are nothing like the early 70's, which are nothing like the late 70's. This CD doesn't give a thorough chronical of the hits that spanned his career. Rather, it gives a lot of songs that get tons of radio airplay, and forgets about the songs that REALLY depict the greatness of Elvis. This album won't show you the country side of Elvis or the Gospel. It's another "Best Of" with a different title. And trust me...this is NOT a "Best Of". It doesn't have the deep, soulful songs like "I've Lost You" or "Tomorrow Never Comes" or "We Can Make the Morning". You won't find the fun, rocking songs like "Paralyzed" (my favorite song from the 50's), "When my blue moon turns to Gold again" or "Let Me. You won't find "Such a Night", "Witchcraft" or "Please Don't Drag that string around". You want a beautiful love balad? Try "Something Blue". "Gently". "Love Letters". Even from the movies..."Puppet On a String" or "Suppose". From the late mid to late 60's, you won't hear "Long, Black Limousine" or "Tomorrow is a long time".BMG, in their efforts to put out a money maker, has managed to put 0 efforts into their work. You call this a tribute to the greatest? Maybe if he was the greatest at being lazy while making tons of money. This is NOT a fitting tribute to the KING.

C'mon, RCA! How many times are you gonna pull the same trick? Not only has half of the tracks on this album been issued over and over ad nauseum, there really is little reason for this sorry excuse for a release. You're better off buying the full 3-CD ARTIST OF THE CENTURY collection. You'll get more for your money, believe me! |
