Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com essential recording

This album offers a selection of Sandoval's better known jazz fanfares, full of the kind of roundhouse melodies and cantering tempos that allow his prodigious chops room to maneuver. Sandoval is also capable of gentle caresses and inventive turns of phrase, which he works in between foghorn blasts on tracks like his own "Luna de miel en Guama," and Abelardo Valdes's "Almendra." The rest of the songs here range from such familiar American fare as the show tune "Maria" and Dizzy Gillespie's "A Night in Tunisia," to Sandoval's own "Red Moon" and "Blues en dos partes," and a Latin reworking of "My Way," naturally entitled "A mi manera." All eventually serve as the musical equivalent of batting practice for the slugger/trumpeter, who sends note after note flying into the bleachers. --Britt Robson

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Overview of Talent, February 21, 2000
This review is from: Best of (Audio CD)
This CD illustrates Arturo's extraordinary trumpet playing ability while providing even listeners who only moderatly like jazz great songs such as Maria and My Way. If you are a fan of jazz, his songs and especially the classic A Night in Tunisia will fulfill your desires. All songs showcase Sandoval's diversity and ability. If your a trumpet player, you will be impressed and astonished, but this CD will be enjoyable to all who appreciate and enjoy music.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a guy, September 19, 2001
This review is from: Best of (Audio CD)
Simply put, Arturo Sandoval is one of the most amazing musicians of our time. This CD puts together some of his best work, although several tracks lack the Cuban "essence" that go with most of his songs. It is truly outstanding none the less. During Sandovals' cadenza on "A Night in Tunisia", you can hear someone in the audience yell out "Damn!" after one of his famed high notes... well put. This is one CD that's absolutely worth buying.

5.0 out of 5 stars Now this is great jazz and trumpet music, August 28, 2001
This review is from: Best of (Audio CD)
If you saw his movie (For Love Or Country-great movie) and you like jazz music with an awesome trumpet player than you will love this C.D. There is very little vocal, instead the trumpet is the lead singer. There are many other outstanding musicians and instruments that make this a great C.D. I bought the soundtrack from Love Or Country and was very dissapointed, but this C.D. more than made up for it. If you want more big band jazz/trumpet music than my second recommendation would be Cubanismo by Jesus Alemany
