However you slice it , Gilberto Astrud is one of the most prolific and pioneering voices in modern day music. After hearing my initial introduction of her vocals in " The Girl from Ipenema" , I became instantly infatuated with her singing. After hearing several more songs , I became instantly hooked. Labeled as the " Queen of Bossa Nova" , Gilberto Astrud transcends musical genres and captivates audiences from around the world. Astrud has influenced such reknowned artist as Sade and Sinead O'Connor. Not only is she an artist that has a captivating style that's so simplistically unforgettable....she has compiled a library of music that will influence musical generations in the future. This "millennium collection" captures the esential songs that catipulted her musical career into symbolic status. Needless to say , I highly recommend this cd.

Romantic, jazzy, relaxing. What more could you ask for? Astrud's voice has romantic, lilting quality that is very unique. To my ear, there are a few spots where she sounds a little off-key, but for me it just adds to her charm. I could listen to this CD for hours on end - and I have. I wish I knew more about music so I knew all the right words to describe the music. All I can say is, every single song on this album is a winner, and the instrument playing is superb. You will not regret buying this CD. Ah...so nice!

Sort of lounge music but if you like soft jazz this is great. Nobody does Girl From Ipanema like Astrud. The whole CD is good. Play this back-to-back with Sergio Mendes and Brazil '66 and you are likely to go to sleep smiling.

I am a jazz guitarist and recently came across a Chord Melody arrangeemnt of "The Girl From Ipanema". I had not played any Bossa Nova and thought iut would be fun. I often listen to other musicians play a tune I'm learning in order to steal ideas. I bought this disk because it contains the definitive arrangement of TGFI.
This disk is so warm and personal. It's like you are attending a party where there are a bunch of skilled musicians and one of the guests stands up and starts to sing. That's how intimate this recording is. Buy it!

I've been into Bossa Nova for a while, and in my opinion Astrud Gilberto is either the Queen or the First Lady or the Queen Mother of Bossa Nova. Her charmingly unpretentious vocals set the precedent for female Bossa vocals ever since her smash hit, "Girl From Ipanema," with Jobim and Joao Gilberto (her husband at the time).
This album is worth having in part just because of the Joao and Jobim tunes on it; I'd say that namely the aforementioned "Girl From Ipanema," "Agua De Beber" and "Corcovado" are the best Bossa Standards on this album. "Misty Roses," "Dindi," and the others don't have the same punch, polish, or feel, and in my opinion aren't as good. I will say that "Berimbau" is kind of a fascinating and catchy little tune. One thing that kept me from giving this album five stars is that it doesn't hold up over time, in my opinion. Call me a heretic, but part of Astrud's charm is that she doesn't come across as a professional vocalist; unfortunately that also detracts from a few of the tracks. I think the greatest and most lasting Bossa Albums are probably Jobim's WAVE, STONE FLOWER, and GETZ/GILBERTO. That said, this probably makes my list of top ten Bossa albums, and forms an important part of the canon. Take it from the Neophyte: if you're a convinced Bossa Fan, buy this album.
