4.0 out of 5 stars This porridge is just about right!, May 24, 2001

This review is from: The Best of Atlanta Rhythm Section: 20th Century Masters (Millennium Collection) (Audio CD)
The Millennium Collection series is a lot like Goldilocks at the Three Bears house. Sometimes the porridge is too hot - how can you possibly distill the career of The Who, The Jackson Five or even Bing Crosby into 10 tracks? Sometimes the porridge is too cold - calling Eddie Kendricks or Rita Coolidge a "Master" is just too much of a stretch.

This is one of those collections that is just about right. ALS were a very good mid-tempo, classic rock band of the mid-70's with solid songs, respectable vocals and very good arrangements. Sort of a Steely Dan-cum-Southern Rock combination. Their biggest hit was the soulful "So Into You" ("I am so into you I can't think of nothing else."), but they also made the top 40 with the onanistic implications of "Imaginary Lovers", "Doraville", the largely forgotten "Do It Or Die", and the wonderful uptempo "Not Gonna Let It Bother Me Tonight". Also include is their cover of the Classic IV 60's hit "Spooky" ('Life sure is crazy with a spooky little girl like you.'), the band from who's ashes ALS rose. A little filler, but a nice, although not critical collection for 70's Classic Rock fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to ARS, December 7, 2006
This review is from: The Best of Atlanta Rhythm Section: 20th Century Masters (Millennium Collection) (Audio CD)
This is a great CD for people who would like a nice introduction to this very talented group. It has a nice choice of songs and the sound quality is excellent. What made ARS stand out so much in their was their lead singer, Ronnie Hammond. He has to be one of the underrated male vocalists ever. His voice is so beautiful, soulful and smooth. I just wish he hadn't retired from singing.

In the 1970's, the market place was swamped with south of the Mason-Dixon line musicians. If you need to expand your Southern Rock collection, Atlanta Rhythm Section MUST be in it!

This is truly a good "hits" collection, of this very solid Southern Rock band. They were formed from members of the old Classics IV and another band. Atlanta Rhythm Section does a phenomenal version of the old hit "Spooky" that holds up really well today from a musical standpoint. Even though it was a more minor hit for them, it sounds like it should have reached the top of the charts. The band was aptly named, as their songs always seem to be "in the groove."

There are a number of ARS CDs masquerading as the real deal; having fallen for this, I have 3 cds that say it's ARS but it's some cheesy cover band making a poor attempt to sing these songs let alone make them sound halfway decent. That said...I have finally found an ARS CD that is actually...ARS. This one is awesome, great sound quality, just wish there was more hits on it; there are a few classic hits, but then it's mostly the seldom heard stuff; fine in itself, but to hear more hits would have been epic. If you are looking for the real ARS, this is it. I've played it a number of times; very enjoyable.

Love this band... I am unfortunatly too young to have been able to see them in their hey-day... But, this is a great CD, with a few of their most famous hits for fans of all ages.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good, August 25, 2010
This review is from: The Best of Atlanta Rhythm Section: 20th Century Masters (Millennium Collection) (Audio CD)
One reviewer mentioned that he or she wishes there were more hits on this compliation. What hits are those this collection would actually be better with some more obscure songs on it. To be honest 9 times out of 10 the obscure songs are better than the radio friendly catchy songs. Here is a short list of great ARS songs that kick the hell out of So Into You, Spooky and Imaginairy Lover.

1. Close The Door
2. Who You Gonna Run To
3. Silent Treatment
4. Another Man's Woman
5. Sky High
6. Hitch Hikers Hero
7. Alien
8. While Time Is Left i could go on all and all this is a decent collection but for real ARS fans i suggest you get a hold of all the songs from my list. Actually what would be nice is if they would release a best of 2cd set. With songs from all the ARS albums right from 1972 all the way to 1997.

This is the far best compilation with ARS songs; although, "Alien" isn't included, which is the song that I love. 20th Century Masters has put another great band to their collection for the best quality sound. This CD has twelve songs from their 70s era with a very detailed notes inside the booklet with great pictures of the band. I had received the jewel case, so there might not be all the features with the Eco-friendly case. I do agree with all other reviews that this is a good introduction of ARS. This is such a great CD, I would defiantly recommend this.
