Editorial Reviews

2008 archive release containing the best of the late Folk singer's BBC Recordings. One of the finest singers Englnd has ever produced, Sandy Denny was a linchpin of the original Fairport Convention. Delivering, a radical mixture of Dylan covers and Renaissance music, she helped make Fairport leaders of Britain's '60s Folk explosion. Her very earliest recordings were straight Folk workouts with mostly just voice and guitar digging into a revealing selection of cover tunes and her last recordings suggesting a never-developed Jazz direction. This CD features the best of her BBC recordings, regarded by many to contain her finest works and is compiled from the critically acclaimed Live At The BBC four disc box set and is a wonderful introduction to Sandy's BBC recordings and is considered by many to contain some of her finest recordings. 15 tracks. Universal. 2008.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great entry point into Denny's music, October 18, 2011

This review is from: Best of the BBC Recordings (Audio CD)
This was the first Sandy Denny album I purchased. I did have CDs of her early work with Fairport Convention, and I was looking for a compilation CD to learn whether or not I wanted to buy her solo work. This is one beautiful album, and now that I own her studio recordings as well, I can say that these live performances are, overall, my favorites. On most of the songs she accompanies herself on piano or guitar (the last two songs are with a band, which I find jarring after the meditative pieces which precede them). It's the Denny album I listen to most often. I love its version of "Who Knows Where the Time Goes?" which I think has more melancholy chords than the Fairport version (which is lovely, too, but in a completely different way). A few of the tunes on here which I prefer to the studio versions are "Next Time Around," "The Music Weaver," and "Bushes and Briars" - they seem more expressive and direct. Anyway - the album's a great starting place for looking into Denny's music.
