This cookbook is interesting, both as a cookbook and a record of food preparation from 1949 to 1959. It contains the best of the bake off recipes from the first 10 years of the cook offs. But just remember, or at least be aware that in those years if you wanted pie crust or biscuits, you made them from scratch. These are not the recipes of today where you are instructed to break out a can of breadsticks or unroll refrigerated pie crust. Of course you can always use those; but some might expect what are the' norm' for today's easy bake off recipes in this book and that is not the case.
I wish they would tell which year each individual recipes won. But there are tips on how to bake perfectly, freezing tips, measurements and equivalents - for example; cream cheese and cottage cheese exchanges. How to bake yeast breads is included. I do also wish they would list ingredients at the top of each recipe, they are in bold print within the directions, but it is sometimes easy to overlook something. Many pictures are included, but most are in black and white. Hints are included in each section, for example; to make smooth round dumplings, dip the spoon in cold water before dropping each dumpling. Included are recipes for yeast breads, quick breads, main dishes, cakes, frostings, cookies, pies and desserts. So if you want to make brownies and other recipes from scratch, have great results and lots of hints and help this is a good book for you. Beginners and more advanced cooks would appreciate this cookbook.

My Mother was a Great Baker. My Dad was a Great Stove Top Cook. They complimented each other quite well.Mother said Everyone looked forward to the "Bake~Offs" Annually.Published long before televised, recipes were "scooped up" at the Grocers. The magazine was a huge hit with Ladies in the late 1950's and still to this Day.Mother made a particular Favourite for Holidays.A recipe that used Yeast Dough,Orange juice and zest. Along with Almonds, slivered and buns twisted. Devoured at Times before Dinner could ever be served! {That absolutely delicious}.With 1000 Recipes You will never want for Inspiration on "what's for Dinner/Holiday Meals,Lunches,Parties, et cetera".Since this Is an Older book for Cookery, you may substitute newer Ingredients. I cannot recommend this more Highly than the fact My Mother considered Pillsbury Products the Best of the many Brands available to purchase. They Never failed Her. They still remain Now and Do Not fail me or Hunny,my Husband either. Those are precious words to Live by when a product Brand Name continues for longer than 60 years. So many 'flash in the Pan' items come and go~Pillsbury stays at a level of what We trust for Integriety and Continued Brand Effectiveness.Thank You to the Partners and Amazon that collectively bring such Excellence on a Daily basis.

As a child I remember my mom having the orginial 1959 cookbook and using it often. I was not expecting much when I ordered a copy, but this is the exact replica of the original publishing - pictures and all. The cookbook has some great recipes for cakes (all kinds), cookies, breads, and even casseroles. This is an excellent addition if you are a vintage cookbook collector.

I was disappointed when I received this cookbook. It is from 1959 so I usually cook a little different today. It has time honored receipes from that bake-off so I do look forward to trying some of them but I was looking for something using today's mixes. I like to bake from scratch when I have the time but was looking for something to imbellish ready mixes to make them taste homemade in half the time.
