5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant British budget compilation
Barbara is my favorite pop-country singer - I don't count Dolly as a pop-country singer, as most of her recordings are traditional - and this compilation of some of her music with MCA shows why.

Barbara tackled every type of song, or so it seemed, but she had a soft spot for R+B classics. Her biggest hit came via a cover of an R+B song (If loving you is wrong) and it...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good collection of hits
This 1979 release showcases the best from Barbara Mandrell between the years of 1975-1978. Her mega-hit "Sleeping Single in a Double Bed" is included. This CD showcases Barbara's wide range from soulful R&B on "Woman To Woman" to the tear-jerking "That's What Friends Are For." Other highlights of this CD include "Standing Room...

Barbara is my favorite pop-country singer - I don't count Dolly as a pop-country singer, as most of her recordings are traditional - and this compilation of some of her music with MCA shows why.

Barbara tackled every type of song, or so it seemed, but she had a soft spot for R+B classics. Her biggest hit came via a cover of an R+B song (If loving you is wrong) and it suits her well. My favorites are Married but not to each other (a similar idea to Kenny Rogers' Daytime friends, but a very different song), That's what friends are for, Standing room only, Darlin' and Years .... but every song here is a masterpiece.

Some of the reviews attached to this page appear to relate to other Best of Barbara Mandrell CD's with different track listings. My review relates to the 23-track album released in Britain in 1999. This has a lot in common with the Ultimate Collection, the strongest collection released in America (not counting the unavailable Razor and Tie double CD).

So, this album (exclusively compiled from MCA masters) contains six songs not available on the Ultimate Collection, these being Wish you were here, Darlin', To me (with Lee Greenwood), That's what friends are for, After the lovin' and When you get to the heart (with the Oak Ridge Boys). The six tracks on the Ultimate Collection but not here are Tonight my baby's coming home, The midnight oil, Fooled by a feeling, In times like these, Angel in your arms and I wish that I could fall in love today.

Most of you will therefore not want both and you can make up your mind based on the differences. Dedicated Barbara fans should note that some of the tracks here are not currently available anywhere else. Knowing how record companies operate in Britain, if you want this particular compilation, don't delay - it might go out of print.

5.0 out of 5 stars Barbara Mandrell what can I say total ENTERTAINER, May 11, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Best of (Audio CD)
Any fan of country music of the 1970's would love this cd. Barbara Mandrell was cutting edge then and into the 1980's. I'm surprised nobody has redone any of her singles. I guess once Barb has done it no one can touch it! Sleeping Single In A Double Bed and Love is Thin Ice are my 2 favorite singles from this greatest hits collection. I promise you it is well worth the money to add this to your collection! And Barbara, the country fans do miss your performances. No can hold a candle to one of your performances a "Total Entertainer".

This is a great collection of Barbara's early hits. Pick this up if you can find it because Barbara Mandrell's music will become harder and harder to find. Every song on this album is top-notch!!!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A true bargain!, July 23, 2009
This review is from: Best of (Audio CD)
Barbara Mandrell was my favourate female C&W singer in the late 70's
and saw her shows a few times. She was incredible; not only did she
sing wonderfully but she also played almost every musical instrument!
On this CD you'll find all her TOP 10 songs including all her number
ones! All this for 2,98 unbelievable. We're talking about original
recordings. Any country music lover should buy this.

This compilation of Barbara's "Best of" has most of her better known hits. The version of "I Was Country when Country Wasn't Cool" is the one with George Jones coming in, and her version of "Wish You Were Here" is one of my all time favorites. While I enjoyed the songs, this is apparently a CD that was originally released in the UK, according to the credits. I mention that because the "sound" quality, while okay, is not what I have heard on many of the US released CD's to which I'm accustomed. The sheet liner is somewhat dated as well. It provides a biographic summary of Barbara's career but ends saying she was still touring, working the country circuit, and also in "cabaret." Barbara retired a number of years ago so it's obviously an older release. But I'm still glad I bought it and if you're a Barbara Mandrell fan, and if you can get it at a good price, buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love Barbara!, October 3, 2007
This review is from: Best of (Audio CD)
This CD was first released in 1979 on LP, and 8 track. Then came Cassette and finally CD. I have it in all formats. Most fans will have this if they collect everything Barbara! Some reviews mention "wish you were here" being on this CD. That song came out in 1981 long before this best of was released. To those people I say check your song tracks. It's a good CD with the high light of Barbara's late 70's career!
