5.0 out of 5 stars The Best of Baxter
I remember this wonderful Les Baxter instrumental album from the early 1970's when I was employed as an image announcer at a Beautiful Music radio station in Houston, KODA AM/FM. Although there is a number of outstanding cuts on this disc, my favorite will always be the "Medic" theme. "Medic" was the first of television's doctor/hospital drama...

2.0 out of 5 stars Sickly-sweet, over-orchestrated bilge
I dimly remembered some of these tunes from my childhood, so I thought I'd give this disc a shot. I guess Baxter's arrangements were OK in their time, but that time is long gone. Unless you like your music WAY overblown, with over-the-top instrumentals and sighing choruses, skip this one.

I remember this wonderful Les Baxter instrumental album from the early 1970's when I was employed as an image announcer at a Beautiful Music radio station in Houston, KODA AM/FM. Although there is a number of outstanding cuts on this disc, my favorite will always be the "Medic" theme. "Medic" was the first of television's doctor/hospital drama series, and it featured Richard Boone, who was later to star in the long-running western series "Paladin". The "Medic" theme had another title - "Blue Star". This is what I feel is the centerpiece of this totally wonderful album. It is brim-full of romantic passion and pathos, and it really plays on your heart-strings. This album is a collection of some of the finest and best-arranged themes from that wonderful era of what was then called "beautiful music" radio. As a veteran of that broadcast medium, I whole-heartedly recommend "The Best of Baxter."
