Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Science investigator Beakman's hair may look like it took the business end of a powerful electric shock, but as host of the silly but enlightening The Best of Beakman's World, he proves far too savvy about natural forces to make such a blunder. With the help of penguin smart alecks Don and Herb (voiced by Alan Barzman and Bert Berdis), and ratty-looking rodent Lester (Mark Ritts), Beakman (Paul Zaloom) explains, in brief, sketch-like blackouts, how a lot of Stuff works. Sure, one can contain water in an upside-down glass with a mere playing card; it's called air pressure. Yes, a tennis ball that bounces off a bouncing basketball will shoot 15 feet in the air. No, one can't push a stick through a small pile of table salt sitting in a tissue-covered paper tube. Indeed, the mysteries of a camera obscura can be explored with a cardboard box. Big ideas, simple (and fun) execution. --Tom Keogh

5.0 out of 5 stars I've got Beakmania, March 29, 2006

This review is from: Best of Beakman's World (DVD)
I came in search of all the seasons, being a devoted Beakman watcher when I was a kid and longing to remember all the good episodes. Alas, there was only this video, which I thoroughly enjoyed. It was a lot easier than trying to decipher all the episodes I had taped way back when(they were very old and skipped a lot). Maybe if we can rally together, they will come out with a boxed set of all 5 seasons! Here's to that!!

5.0 out of 5 stars glad to have it, October 1, 2004
This review is from: Best of Beakman's World (DVD)
I was so happy when I found this DVD! I loved Beakman's World back during its original run on The Learning Channel. I thought it was so funny and made science interesting and fun. I learned a lot of "tricks" or rather cool experiments, in particular how to balance two forks on a toothpick! The only thing that is wrong with the DVD is Josie isn't on it enough. She was one of my favorite characters and I guess since this DVD isn't complete episodes, the scenes she appears in weren't included as much. Also, the only other bad thing is, it isn't long enough! Only 60 minutes! I am certainly grateful as it has been many years since I have seen the show on TV. But really, it is just a teaser. They need to put the entire series on DVD!

At any rate, it is a good starter for anyone who has not seen the show, or who hasn't seen it in a long time and remembers it! I would definitely recommend it for kids and adults, whether they like science or not. I never really liked science, but this show just made it so fun! The show is very cleverly written and the acting is great. It was obviously made by talented and intelligent people with a sense of humor, sometimes weird, but always funny! What more can I say? Everyone should watch this show!

4.0 out of 5 stars This show is a great way to learn basic science, November 18, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Best of Beakman's World [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I have always been a Beakman fan, and I was sorry the show was taken off the air. The experiments are great and the presentations are funny and informative. Science can be fun! This "Best of" gathers a number of experiments and "fast facts", and it's a great gift for people who either liked the show or who need a fun introduction to scientific principles. I'm only sorry Josie doesn't appear much, since the in-between bits she was featured in are trimmed here. Liza doesn't appear at all. I bought this tape for myself and I have now gone back and ordered two additional copies to give to my nephews for XMas.
