A Diversity of Styles, May 20, 2008
This review is from: Best of Berlin 1979-1988 (Audio CD)
There's more to Berlin than their trademark hit 'Take My Breath Away', and this CD showcases the variety in their catalogue. Sure, all of what they offer here falls neatly into the category of 80s new wave/synth-pop, but there's enough variation here to make this compilation fairly interesting. I especially enjoyed the thought-provoking 'Sex (I'm A...)' which is not trite pornography (as one benighted reviewer has opined) but rather challenges the listener to examine the roles a woman is forced assume in a male dominated society which treats her as a sexual object. While the male singer simply repeats, "I'm a man" over and over again, affirming his identity, the female vocalist (Terri Nunn - Who really has the pipes, by the way!) takes on various and sundry roles - from goddess, to b****, to mother, to geisha, to slave, to little girl - each designed to cater to the sexual fantasies of a male partner.
Other stand out tracks include 'The Metro', 'Like Flames', and 'You Don't Know'. All in all, not a masterpiece, but an enjoyable ride.
