Bobby Day and then some, November 9, 2001
This review is from: Best of Bobby Day (Audio CD)
This is an interesting compilation in that, in addition to the hits of Bobby Day (Robert Byrd for real), it contains hits and obscure recordings done by Day under other names and as part of duos and groups. In addition, "The Duck" by Jackie Lee appears - the relationship being, Lee (in reality Earl Nelson) was the other half of the Bob and Earl duo in which Day was the "Bob" for a while. Besides his major hit "Rock-in Robin", all his other top-100 sides as by Bobby Day are here. "Buzz-Buzz-Buzz" plus other sides by the Hollywood Flames - one of his groups - also appear. Tunes by Bob and Earl, both with Bobby Day and with the "other" Bob in the duo, Robert Relf, complete the mix.
Sound quality overall is very good with a couple tracks (5 and 7) down a notch. The entire CD is in mono with the exception of track 15. The set includes an eight-page booklet with a history of the recording career and music relationships of Bob and his peers.
All told, this is a uniquely comprehensive and well-produced compilation done by the people at Varese Vintage.
