Ain't Nothin' Like the Real Thing!,
By Jerry (Nevada USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Best of (Audio CD)
I was extremely excited to finally get Bobby's Greatest, but my excitement quickly turned to disappointment after about five notes on the first track, when it became abundantly clear that these were not the original recordings. Please forgive me, but I'm a Baby Boomer, and my musical awarenes was born with the music of the late 50's early 60's, and Rydell's hits are imprinted note-for-note in my mind. I guess these tracks were re-recorded and/or re-mixed, but the result is a reasonable facsimile, definitely not the real thing. In fact, on several of the tracks it doesn't even sound like the young Bobby, but an older Bobby! Something was lost in the remix, mainly Bobby's voice. And check out the scratchy harmonica cacaphony on FORGET HIM.....OUCH! The closest to the original is VOLARE. WILD ONE & SWINGIN' SCHOOL sound like rejected early takes. Deceived....Yes. Disappointed....for sure. But, as another reviewer mentioned, even though it's not the original, it still sounds okay on a car stereo!

Dissapointed,

While searching for a while for Bobbys Hits on a CD, I bought this. Unfortunately (for me anyway) they are all re-recordings. While his voice is still good, it's just not the same. Luckily I can pull out my old Cameo LP of his original Greatest Hits. Scratchy, yes, but there is no substitute for the real thing! I should have checked out Amazon's review page first!

Rydell remake,
By A Customer
This review is from: Best of (Audio CD)
Bought this album from another site. I thought that it was original. Here I could have listened to the tracks or read the reviews and would have known it wasn't original. Based on the reviews I wouldn't have bought it. I usually send back remakes, but not in this case. It is a good albuum and Bobby sounds as he does today, older, more mature. If any of us ever attended live performances of our favorite artists we found that they usually sounded different in the live setting. Some anthologies have a couple of takes of the same song from the original recording session. The best one seems to prevail.I consider myself a purist and like the original recordings but this album is decent and the recordings of Forget Him and Volare are enjoyable. I have rerecordings of other artists that I was surprised with and none is as good as this one. Rick Nelson's is good, Paul Anka's not so good. Just about anything by Roy Orbison or Elvis Presley is good. I guess if you like the artist you can be a little more forgiving. I thought it suprising to see such poor reviews of a decent album. But I would still buy the original if I could only have one or the other. I'm not sorry that I have this one too.

Not the orignial sounds I grew up with,

When I ordered Bobby Rydell(Greatest hits)I thought I was getting the original songs sung by him when I was young. The cover showed a young Bobby Rydell, but the music was redone by him now. I did not like the sound. so I returned the CD. When I order a CD I expect the original sounds. Not a remake version. Somewhere on the CD you should inform listerners that this is not the Original songs but a remake. Thank You.

Remake or not, it sounds great in the car!,

Although the originals have a certain allure, these songs are well mastered, clean and the added bass response packs a little punch. Who can't help but sing along and shake a bit even during those long car rides. If you were drawn to the quality of Bobby's voice in the beginning, you'll appreciate the same cuts on this disc as well.

Maybe Not An Oldie, But Definitely a Goodie,

These may not be the actual original recordings but they are close enough to the original sound to give this CD 4 stars. Bobby sounds great and the songs evoke those old memories. It would have rated 5 stars if 'Sway' has been included instead of 'World Without Love'. Still, its great fun and if you are a Rydell fan, it is a must-have.

I feel deceived,

There was nothing on the listing that indicated that these cuts were not originals. The picture on the album cover was an old picture so I assumed that so were the cuts. Even the album itself does not indicate that these numbers were recently recorded. My biggest mistake was not ordering thro' Amazon.com originally---I would have read the reviews and it would have saved me a huge disappointment---I now have ordered the import album and am hoping for better luck. (The review for that album was much better!).

Not original recordings,

If you are a Bobby Rydell fan and have nothing, I recommend this album. If you want to hear Bobby as you heard him on the radio back in the good old days, this CD is not for you. This CD is a remake that doesn't quite live up to the original recordings.

Not bad for a 50 year old.,

This is not a bad recording. I have had it about a year, and altho it is Bobby Now, it still doesn't sound that bad. What is it going to take to get Abkco off their duff and re-release the Parkway and Cameo label material. This stuff would sell. Critics Choice thought it would be out last year but still nothing appears anywhere, except the imports and this K-Tel remake. Maybe someday.

Bobby's originals are STILL absent!,

For some reason, Allen Klein of ABKCO has STILL not released the original Cameo-Parkway masters, so all we STILL get are these horrible re-recordings of Bobby's best hits. Fortunately for me, I've got most of his hits on vinyl for me to enjoy.
