These four gentlemen may have been the most important players in all of soul music. They were an interracial group before it was popular or even accepted. They formed the core of the house backing-band at Stax Records, wrote classic soul songs, and discovered and produced artists at Stax. And as this CD makes very clear, they recorded great songs in their own right. All instrumentals, the MGs wrote their own classics-"Green Onions," "Time Is Tight"--and interpreted others--"Groovin'," "Hang 'Em High." Booker T and The MG's had a really cool sound in the 60's. I think they were way ahead of their time. The classic "Green Onions" is a good case in point. It starts off this album. "Green Onions" may be the only song by this group that most people are familiar with, but this album is full of gems. The jive "Can't Be Still", complete with hand clapping is great and the acid sound of "Boot-leg" was also ahead of it's time. "Tic-Tac-Toe" is a good pop tune and "Be My Lady" is groovy man. And then there is "Summertime", recorded before Janis Joplin's version and it is fantastic. I think I like it the best of any of the other tracks. It is bluesy and sultry, just like Janis' version. And it sticks in my mind days after hearing it. All of these songs are instrumentals. They didn't record vocals. This is a CD you will be proud to have in your collection.

I have both this one and The Defnitive soul collection, The reason I like this one better is because most of the songs are in True Stereo while the collection only has a few in Stereo, Yes, Most are in Mono. So if you want them in Stereo, get this one!!!

This collection is from Atlantic and covers 1962-67. Their is another collection from Fantasy that covers everything after this but I need to get the anthology from Rhino that combines both. In the meantime this makes great background music while you are cooking dinner, reading, working, getting laid, etc. There is sort of a sameness to most of their songs but it's a good sameness. "Green Onions" (along with Peter Gunn's Theme) are probably the coolest instrumentals ever.
